Global Precast Motorsports driver David Ostella recently completed the second round of the Florida Winter Tour where he and longtime tuner Mike Roth continued to come to grips with a new Cameron Motorsports/Swedetech/Maranello package and the finer points of ProShifter racing. Expecting a tough run on a very technical track heading in, the senior rookie followed his strong debut weekend with 16th and 13th at Moroso and now sits seventh in the championship with one round left to run.
After a full day of practice on Friday, Ostella qualified 13th in a field of 24 Saturday morning before a rough opening lap led to the tail of the pack in the prefinal. After spending five laps to catch the back end, the 16-year-old then took three spots over the next three laps and another pair coming to checkers 19th. The main event brought a better opening and after jumping two spots from a standing start Ostella took another and went the full race distance in 16th, setting his best lap of the race on 17 of 18 as he worked closer to the mark. While out of position on the pavement, Ostella and Roth were optimistic heading to the second start on Sunday.
While a 58.0 lap was top rookie qualifier and inside one second of pole in the late start, Ostella still lined up 14th and had work to do heading to the prefinal. Work it he did, and quickly. Following his best start of the weekend, Ostella had gained four by the end of the opening lap and sat tenth after the first flier. He nearly went the distance there, backing up just one spot coming in as he wrestled with a bent steering column after contact. In the main event the Canadian once again had a good start but was pushed wide dicing through the early corners and rounded lap one in 15th. He then spent the first half of the race working back to 13th and held station for the remainder.
"By Sunday we had a good kart," Roth said afterward, noting his driver's best race laps of the weekend. "We made some more changes for the final and the kart was solid, best of the weekend and David had zero complaints so we think we have a good grasp heading to the final round."
The 2008 Florida Winter Tour concludes March 14-16 at Ocala Gran Prix.
