MENEZES TO MAKE HIS BID AT CIK-FIA WORLD KARTING CHAMPIONSHIP

Californian to compete for the world title in Spain this weekend

ZUERA, SPAIN (September 15, 2010) - At 15-years old, not many can say they compete for a world title in their specific sport. For American Gustavo Menezes, that dream will be fulfilled this weekend as he will compete for the first time in his career at the CIK-FIA World Karting Championship. The event is set to be contested at the Circuito Internacional Zuera in Spain on September 16-19. The event will utilize the KF2 style engine with 125 drivers set to battling, including Menezes. The Californian, who finished 10th at the 2009 CIK-FIA KF3 World Cup, will be celebrating his 16th birthday Sunday with hopes of holding the trophy on the podium following the main event.

The 2010 season has been Menezes' first full-year aboard a KF2 package as part of the prestigious Tony Kart Racing Team. Following three years of campaigning the United States and European ranks in the KF3 (Junior) category, Menezes has shown the speed to compete against some of the best in the world. Menezes currently sits 12th in the WSK World Series KF2 championship standings following up and down performances in Portugal and the United States. Menezes was at the front of the field for both events, however, contact took him out of contention for podium finishes in each outing.

"The 2010 season has been a learning experience," stated Menezes. "Moving to the KF2 category has been an easy move from the KF3 package, as I have adapted to the extra speed and the racing prowess of the drivers I'm racing against. The Tony Kart chassis and the Vortex engines have been awesome, we just have not been able to catch a break. I'm looking forward to racing in my first World Karting Championship as this year's field is like no other but include many of the same drivers I have raced against all season. My goal is to post a solid qualifying lap and stay clean through the heat races in order to line up on the main event grid with a chance at the podium come Sunday. That would be a great birthday gift."

The event will begin Thursday with a full day of practice. More track time will be offered Friday with qualifying set to take place 4:30pm local time. The order will spilt the field into groups for three rounds of heat races set to run on Saturday. Results from those qualifying races will set the field of 34-drivers for the Prefinal and Final to take place Sunday. The main event is set to be televised live on Eurosport International channel from 11:45am to 12:45pm local time.
