Path Valley Banquet Honors 25 Track Champions

Spring Run, PA_ Two Wheel Promotions honored the regions top racers and 25 Path Valley Speedway Park champions with trophies and more than $15,000 in points money Nov. 3 at Pleasant Hall.

"You completed 98 races in 2001 and that's a phenomenal accomplishment," retiring race director John Winsett told more than 400 assembled at the second annual combined awards banquet. "We deeply appreciate the hard work and dedication of all our drivers and their families, crew members and sponsors who make your racing possible."

Two national champions honored were Legends Cars track champion Harry Garber of Barto who is also the national INEX Legends Cars 2001 champion in the Masters Dirt division and Allen Felix of Shippensburg who won the INEX Legends championship in the Semi-Pro Dirt class.

Five champions repeated 2000 season titles including Doug Hoffman of Newville in the Friday night V-8 Street Stock class and Saturday karters Jimmy Slaseman in caged rookies, Andy Burkholder in junior restricted, Brad Thomas in heavy's and Keith Gillam in junior champ. State champion karters will be announced by the Pennsylvania Dirt Karters Association.

Promoter Ken Geesey also extended thanks individually to the speedway's sponsors and recognized the track's staff and the Lack-Tuscarora Ambulance crew for their hard work and dedication. "Producing so much safe, exciting racing is a team effort and our team of experienced track, tech and tower workers did a magnificent job all season long," he said. "You staged more races than most tracks do in three seasons and you can all be proud that you did it so very well," he told them.

Geesey said that a Nov. 17 drivers meeting to finalize rules will soon be announced and that the 600cc sprints that raced Saturday nights will be added to the 2002 Friday night schedule while the karters will continue to race Saturday mornings and special shows like Junk Cars, motorcycles and rain makeups will race late Saturday afternoons.

Scott Ellerman of Landisburg in the 305 PA Sprints and Jim Brookens of Fayetteville in the 270 Sprints headed the lineup of Friday night champions. Arlin Brougher of Gettysburg in the mini-stocks and Steve McCartney of Doylesburg in the thunder cars are the 2001 four-cylinder champions and Hoffman and Garber are the V-8 Street Stock and Legends champions respectively. In addition to trophies all the Friday night champions received jackets from John Goshorn or Goshorn Racing Supply.

Saturday night champions are Terry Peters of Tower City in 600cc Sprints, Rodney Glass of Fort Loudon in 270 Sprints, Randy Baughman of Dover in 250cc W/C Sportsman, Josh Watkins of Lancaster in 250cc A/C Sportsman and Mark Yoder of Lititz in 125cc.

"Our young kart racers are the future of our sport starting as young as six years old," said Geesey, "and we are proud to have such fine youngsters racing at Path Valley."

The 2001 Path Valley Karting champions are Tyler Bear in Jr. Sportsman I, Keith Gillam in Jr. Champ, Brent Marks in Jr. Sportsman II, Miles Burd Jr. in Super Heavy, Ray Tipton in 2-Cycle, Brad Tomas in Heavy, Matt Dalesio in Medium, Geremey Sheaffer in Lite, Jimmy Slaseman in Caged Rookie, Nicole Eaton in Sr. Champ, Garrett Kuhns in Jr. Stock and Andy Burkholder in Jr. Restricted.

Champions in the Saturday four-wheeler classes are Dane Delancey if Port Royal in Quad 2-Stroke and Chris Crull of Blaine in Quad 4-Stroke. The four-wheelers also raced for AMA points and Path Valley bike and quad racers will be honored separately at the regional AMA awards program.

Special presentations included a substantial scholarship award to Autumn Peterson, Miss Path Valley Speedway Park, who is now a freshman at Shippensburg University of PA.

Mike Beidel of Fayetteville won the Rookie of the Year award after finishing second in points in the four-cylinder thunder car class. Young Beidel led the points much of the season and finished his rookie year only eight points behind champion Steve McCartney. The Hard Luck award went to Earl Tabb Jr. who suffered much of the season with his #51 street stock. The special Rising Star trophy went to 15-year-old Keith Walls of St. Thomas who won five features and finished fourth in the four-cylinder thunder car points.

Geremey Sheaffer of Elliotsburg won the Rookie of the Year award in Path Valley Karting along with his championship in the Lites. The Kart Family Award went to T&T Racing and the Imler family of Bedford County for their support of Troy and Tracy Imler in the #9T and #10T karts who raced in every event. Nathan Danner on #26 won the Most Improved award and Kyle Shultz on the #09 won the Rising Star award for karters.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike off Route 75.
