World Karting Association graces the World Center of Racing

12.28.2009 -- After a cool and cloudy parking and registration day Sunday, karters woke to a clear and sunny Monday morning in Daytona Beach, Fla. As temperatures rise throughout the morning, the weather is nearly perfect for the second day of Daytona KartWeek by Cometic Gasket, and the first day karts in the three WKA national series in attendance hit the track.

Racers in the George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series driven by Mazda hit the infield sprint track at 8 a.m., marking the unofficial open to KartWeek. A healthy group of 2-cycle sprint racers will utilize today to find the fast setups for their go-karts. First-timers at Daytona will be doing double duty in the form of learning the track while attempting to give their crews feedback on what the kart needs in order to become a contender by the time qualifying begins Tuesday.

As Manufacturer's Cup racers and crew focus on the Margay Sprint Championships, all they have to do is glance up to see the enduro and sprint-enduro karts of the Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda zoom down Daytona's superstretch and through turns 3 and 4 at speeds of well over 100 mph. Road racers hit Daytona's high banks just after 9 a.m. and group practice will continue until 5 p.m.

So far everything is going smooth on the Road Racing side. Only a few simple infield spins occurred in the sessions this morning. Similar to the Manuf. Cup teams, road racers will be using today to try different gearings, pipe setups, tire compounds and more in an attempt to find the best combination for Tuesday's and Wednesday's racing.

Unlike previous years when a barren field of green covered the speedway grounds outside turns 1 and 2 of big track, Manuf. Cup and Road Racing teams and fans entering and exiting the speedway from Williamson Blvd. will find haulers and karts of the Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series parked next to a brand-new smooth, sandy-colored quarter-mile dirt track. Speedway workers spent the better part of the last few months preparing the limestone track, and it's clearly ready for racing and looking terrific.

Practice for the Dirt World Championships, which adds a history-making element to this year's KartWeek, got under way this morning as officials work with the racers to pack the track down and work it in before racing begins Tuesday. Rage Karts Speedway Pavement Series regular David Schilling was the first driver to take a lap on the new dirt track, which will also be used for AMA flat-track motorcycles this March. But the oval-track karts of WKA have the speedway this week and a sea of them are expected to vie for World Championship trophies Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is just the beginning of WorldKarting.com's coverage of this year's version of Daytona KartWeek. Continue to check the Web site (www.worldkarting.com) throughout the first half of this week to read updates to the happenings at Daytona. Preview articles for all Manuf. Cup, Road Racing and Dirt will be posted today and additional stories and unofficial results will keep the coverage going Tuesday and Wednesday.
