TAG Masters Class added at Rock Island; Biland USA dropped
A significant change in plans has been announced for this weekend's Rock Island Grand Prix street race in Rock Island, Illinois, following the announcement last week that the Biland National Challenge race had been suspended.
The announcement was made by Biland USA after it was informed by Biland International that the race must have at least 25 entries to be a world qualifier. This reportedly was not consistent with what organizers had been told earlier in the year.
In a gesture to show Biland USA's continued support of the TAG USA program, president Brad Linkus donated the Biland track time so that more TAG racers could compete at the Rock Island Grand Prix. The TAG class is one of four that had reached pre-established class caps of 30 entries.
The Rock Island Grand Prix, and TAG U.S.A. president Tom Argy Jr., announced today that a separate TAG Masters class will be run at this weekend's Rock Island Grand Prix. Competitors who are already registered will be contacted and asked to designate which TAG class they wish to compete in. Licensed TAG drivers over age 35 are also eligible to compete in both events. Biland USA has been named race sponsor for the TAG USA Street Festival and WHBF-TV4 will sponsor the TAG Masters race. The same weights and TAG National rules will be used in both TAG classes.
The purse to be awarded to the TAG Masters event will depend on the entry level, at the discretion of the RIGP organizing committee. A "Rock" will be awarded in both classes.
Biland Challenge drivers over age 16 not already entered in the TAG USA Street Festival will have their entry transferred to TAG, or they can receive a refund. Late registration fees for both TAG classes will be waived until 5 p.m., Thursday. August 28, at which time the $100 late penalty will be applied. A 30 entry cap will be enforced on both classes.
``While none of the parties involved like the idea of making changes in mid- stream, not to mention so close to the actual race, we appreciate the support shown for TAG USA and the Rock Island Grand Prix by Brad Linkus, Pat Polk, and their associates at Biland USA,'' said Roger Ruthhart, president of the Rock Island Grand Prix. ``The outcome will be that more TAG drivers will be able to compete at the Rock Island Grand Prix and we hope to have two very competitive races as a result.''
Drivers entering the TAG Masters class should mark the Biland box on either the printed or online entry forms. Drivers can enter online with a credit card at the Rock Island Grand Prix website www.rockislandgrandprix.com . Drivers with questions about the new format should contact the Rock Island Grand Prix by calling (309) 292-8133 or email grandprix@qconline.com .
