Will test Formula BMW early next year

Roduwan Rashid, a 27 year-old from Putrajaya, became the first champion of the PanGlobal Alex Yoong F1 Driver Search when he fought off a talented field of ten grand final competitors in an intense battle at the KartQuest Circuit last Sunday to win from Shahrulasraf Ishar and Woo Kam Weng.

The ten finalists had all qualified for the grand final with times in the 1 minute 17 seconds bracket clocked in the pre-finals run earlier in the morning which signalled the close battle ahead.

Pole sitter Muhamad Amirullah Abdullah and fourth on the grid Nazrie b. Ramli had each led the 7-lap race but faltered when they each spun and dropped back.

It was an especially sweet victory for Roduwan as he dropped to the last position after the first corner. He showed great tenacity and coolness to keep out of trouble and snatched the win from a very determined Shahrulasraf by a mere three tenths of a second with Woo a further 4 seconds back in third. Sharulasraf started from the back of the grid and fought the whole seven laps with Roduwan to the top two in a hugely exciting and clean race.

Fourteen year old school girl, Siow Nat Li, did extremely well to qualify for the grand final race as she was the only one of two ladies amongst the 42 competitors who reached the last stage of the year-long competition in search of Malaysia's future Formula One driver. She showed that gender is no barrier to motorsport when she gave a good account of herself in the final race.

Roduwan will test with Team Meritus' Formula BMW in a pre-season test early next year together with two other selected competitors from the grand finals. The two who will join Roduwan at the test will be selected from the grand finalists by a panel comprising Team Meritus boss Peter Thompson, Alex Yoong and PanGlobal Insurance.

The Deputy Minister of Youth & Sport, Datuk Ong Tee Keat, officiated in the grand finals and gave out the trophies to the winners with PanGlobal Insurance Bhd's Edwin Wong and Alex Yoong.

The PanGlobal Alex Yoong F1 Driver Search is sponsored by main sponsor, PanGlobal Insurance Bhd., and sponsors: Proton, F&N Sprite Ice, 8TV, and Extreme Park and supported by Alex Yoong and KartQuest Circuit.
