Sixteen Different Winners in 22nd Annual Tulsa Shootout

TULSA, Okla. (December 30, 2006) -- Sixteen different racers from ten different states proved to be the cream of the crop by walking away from Saturday nights' 22nd Annual Tulsa Shootout presented by Brodix finale at Tulsa Expo Raceway with a coveted Golden Driller trophy among their latest possessions.

A half dozen competitors among the nearly 1,100 entries doubled up by scoring a pair of wins in the 22 feature events for Micros, Karts and Quads.

Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Donnie Ray Crawford scored a pair of Micro wins and was bidding for a third before settling for runner-up honors behind Jerrod Wilson in the headline 600cc Multi class division, which attracted a record 130 entries.

Nebraska racers Garrett Swiggart and Jody Krug, along with young Iowa shoe Cayden Carter, each scored a pair of victories in Kart action, while Michael Coburn and Chase Snapp swept the Pro and Amateur portions of the Quad competition, respectively.

The 22nd Annual Tulsa Shootout presented by Brodix attracted entries from 34 different states. A total of 224 different races, including 145 Heat Races, 57 Semis and Qualifiers, and 22 Main events were contested atop the indoor, 0x00bc-mile clay oval over the course of the two-day event.

Micros:

A record 459 Micro entries took part in the 22nd Annual Tulsa Shootout and it was Oklahoma racers Jerrod Wilson and Donnie Ray Crawford snaring the headlines, with Kansas shoe Tanner Mullens and Illini Drew Marshall also scoring Micro wins.

Third-generation shoe Crawford pulled off the unlikely feat of earning front row feature starting positions in each of the Multi, "A" Class and Non-Wing division during Friday's preliminary action.

And after posting wire-to-wire wins in both "A" and Non-Wing classes no Saturday night, the Broken Arrow, OK, ace was poised to score an unprecedented sweep of the three classes, each of which featured at least 110 entries.

But Skiatook, Oklahoma's Jerrod Wilson had other ideas.

Wilson enjoyed a fantastic Friday as well, posting heat race wins in Multis, "A" Class and Non-Wing, then making it a four-for-four Friday with a Qualifying Race win in the Multis. But after disappointing results in the "A" and Non-Wing mains, including one that was derailed by engine woes, Wilson was prepared to play the role of spoiler.

And that's exactly what he did, charging past Dean Alexander on the 18th circuit of the 25-lap Multi main en route to victory lane.

Wilson gridded the Multi main third and charged past outside front row starter Crawford for second on the opening round and set his sights on leader Dean Alexander, who earned the pole position through Friday's Heat and Qualifying Race action.

Wilson stalked Aussie native Alexander, who now reside in California, for the opening half of the race before turning up the heat. Wilson slid past Alexander entering turn one on the 14th lap, only to have Alexander dive back underneath to regain the lead exiting turn two.J Wilson kept the heat on and made the winning move a lap after the race's third and final caution occurred with 17 laps in the books. Wilson rode the rim superbly over the final rounds to secure the win.

Alexander crossed the stripe second but was disqualified when post-race inspection revealed a top wing with illegal offset, handing the runner-up slot to Crawford, who had raced directly in the lead pair's wake all the way.

Tyler Robbins of Illinois claimed the show position, with 17th-starter Josh Pickle and 12th-starter Andrew Peters rounding out the top five.

Earlier in the evening, Crawford initiated his pursuit of a Saturday night Tulsa Shootout hat trick by racing to victory lane in the 20-lap "A" Class main event. Illinois shoe John Dines challenged for the point near the race's mid-stages, but Crawford slipped away to a half-dozen car length victory over the final rounds. Dines settled for second in front of Zach Alley, Aaron Reutzel and 20th-starter Jonathan Beason.

Then, Crawford went to work on a win in the Non-Wing class, which came with an increased difficulty level. Polesitter Jonathan Halford got the jump on Crawford on the initial pair of failed starts that were erased by turn four tangles. Crawford and Halford then raced wheel-to-wheel into turn one on the third start, with Crawford edging into the lead exigent the second turn.

Crawford paced the Non-Wing feature with the rapid trio of Halford, 11th-starter Kevin Bayer and 17th-starter Stan Yockey in close pursuit as the laps wound down. Yockey slipped from contention when he jumped the turn three cushion on the 16th lap, then Bayer took over second on the white-flag lap. Bayer tried to mount a charge on Crawford in the final corner but could not reel in the 16-year-old hotshoe. Halford settled for third, with Yockey and 23rd-starter Austin Laskey rounding out the top five.

In the Restriced "A" Class main event, Indiana's Austin Woodham paced the opening pair of circuits from his pole position before Oregon's Zach Zimmerly zipped into the lead. Zimmerly's apparent drive to victory lane was foiled by Tanner Mullens' dramatic last lap pass. Cody Metscher chased Mullens and Zimmerly to the stripe, with Woodham and Justin Sanders rounding out the top five.

Ty Hulsey jumped into the lead at the outset of the Junior Sprint "A" Main and dominated throughout, only to fail post-race inspection. Drew Marshall of Carmi, IL, was awarded the victory, with Blake Edwards, Cody Ledger, Cody Key and Justin Fletcher rounding out the top five.

Karts:

Ten different drivers representing six different states emerged victorious in 22nd Annual Tulsa Shootout Kart action, with Garrett Swiggart, Jody Krug and Cayden Carter each notching a pair of wins.

Lincoln, Nebraska's Swiggart was the first to pull off the double with wins in Animal Medium and Stock Light action. Swiggart charged from 13th in the Animal Medium feature to overtake race long leader Brandon Aggen en route to the victory. Swiggart took the checkered flag in front of Aggen, Lucas Wallace, Mike Halliburton and Jamie Gerlach.

Swiggart then needed only a handful of laps to race from ninth to snare the lead from James Murphy in the Stock Light main event. Swiggart charged on to victory lane in front of Justin Kern, Kiefer Kalin, Murphy and Doug Vogel.

Hailing from Oskaloosa, IA, Carter would later match Swiggart's double by sweeping both ends of Junior I amateur action. Carter beat Ryan Luza, Ryan Harris, Daulton Greven and Zachary Hockemeier to the line in the Junior I Light feature, then dominated throughout in the Junior I Heavy feature with James Suter, Luza, Nick Gibson and Hockemeier following.

Not to be outdone, Krug of Omaha, NE, would then top the Medium and Heavy portions of Stock Kart action. Krug raced past Justin Kern on the 13th lap of the Stock Medium feature then slipped away in the final rounds to secure the win in front of Kern, Mike Halliburton, Brandon Aggen and Swiggart. Krug and Kern hooked up again the Stock Heavy feature, swapping the lead before Krug took over for keeps on the 15th round following a Kern spin. Krug was chased to the stripe in the Heavy feature by Kenny Lovins, Josh Most, Mike Dickerson and Justin Sherflick.

Jason Gibbs of Redmond, WA, earned the honor of long distance tow among 22nd Annual Tulsa Shootout winners by racing to victory lane in front of Corey Forsythe and Jamie Ferrell in the Run What Ya Brung class. Ferrell then gunned into the early lead in the Yamaha KT 100 feature only to run afoul of early lapped traffic, allowing Chris Birky to shoot into the lead. Birky surrendered the point to Forsythe several rounds later however, with Forsythe posting a comfortable win in front of Ferrell and Bryon Weyer.

Razorback Kenny Lovins raced from 13th to overtake early pacesetter Russell Hunt in the Animal Heavy feature and took the checkered flag in front of Brandon Aggen and Tyler Stevens.

Nebraska's Cody Olsen led all the way in Blue Wazoom action, crossing the stripe in front of Crayton Jirovsky and Jamie Gerlah.

Fifteenth-starter Charles Wood nipped Shayle Bade for victory honors in the Junior Animal class. Skylar Prochaska scored a narrow win over Luke Nagel in the Junior II division, then chased Brandon Beckendorf to the line in the Super Junior II feature.

Quads:

South Dakota's Michael Coburn and Oklahoma's Chase Snapp proved to be the dominant riders in Quad action, with Coburn sweeping the Open and 250cc Pro classes as Snapp matched the accomplishment in the Amateur ranks.

California's Frank Batista led the opening circuit of the 250cc Pro Quad feature before Coburn broke into the lead. Coburn held on the rest of the way to take victory honors in front of Batista and Brad Covington.

Coburn followed up by edging Micah Schliemann for the early lead in the Open Pro Quad main event then checked out, with Covington and Schliemann next to the stripe.

Snapp broke into an early lead in the Open Amateur Quad feature and established a lead commanding enough to survive a late tangle with lapped traffic. Snapp barely held the point then once again slipped way to top Colby Jones and Willie Balthis.

Snapp again proved to be no match in the 250cc Amateur Quad main event, scoring a decisive win with Hollis Foutch and Chad Wilson filling out the podium.
