Bassingham based kart racer Jack Harvey took the second place spoils as his Rotax Mini-Max pre-season build up continued at the Shenington circuit in Oxfordshire at the weekend. (February 19/20)
The Lincoln Minster School pupil set the fastest times in practice on Saturday against more experienced Rotax Mini-Max class opposition. A couple of mechanical glitches caused Jack to finish down the order in the opening heat on Sunday, however.
A storming drive in the second heat saw him claim victory, placing him third on the grid for the final. A mistake by the pole-position driver meant that Jack got baulked at the start and had dropped to fifth place by the end of the opening lap. A fantastic drive meant that he was able to reach second place before the chequered flag.
"I'm pleased with second place this weekend, but I know that we could have had our first win," said Jack. "We got a brilliant set-up on Saturday and were pleased to be two tenths-of-a-second faster than the other racers with more than a season's experience at this level," he added.
"We had a couple of small niggles in the opening heat, but that's what we've been using the club meetings for, for testing and getting those sort of things out of the way. I drove really well in the second heat and should have had a better start in the final but the guy in front of me made an error and it caused us to drop back into the pack."
"It took me a few more laps than it should have done to get back into a rhythm, but once I did I was able to get past the guys in front really easily, I just ran out of laps to catch the winner. It's just one of the things I've got to work on before the start of the big championships. I'm very happy with the pace of both myself and the kart though. The Strawberry Racing team has done a fantastic job," he added.
The result gives him the perfect boost before the Rotax Shakedown meeting at the Clay Pigeon circuit in Dorset next weekend. The event is the first time Jack will have gone head-to-head with all of his 2005 rivals and he is relishing the chance to go up against them and show what he can do.
"I really like the circuit at Clay Pigeon and although I haven't driven the Mini-Max kart there yet I can't wait to see where we stand against our rivals and am looking forward to the competition," said Jack.
"It's going to be a long meeting and my school has been really supportive in my racing so far this year and I hope that I can repay its support by bringing back my first winners trophy in the Mini-Max class," he added.
