With the current calendar about to reach its end, Devlin DeFrancesco is primed to begin the 2009 karting campaign as the World Karting Association kicks off the year with Daytona KartWeek. The biggest event in karting with multiple championships on hand at Daytona International Speedway, DeFrancesco will be among those beginning the George Kugler/Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series driven by Mazda with the Margay Racing Products Nationals. He will race both Monday and Tuesday in Cadet Junior Sportsman, beginning an intense National program.
Along with the WKA Manufacturer's Cup, the eight-year-old is set to contest the Snap-on Stars of Karting National Championship, the Florida Winter Tour, and select one-off events in both the United States and Canada for firstkart.com. Definitely racing Comer Cadet and Rotax Micro-Max in full programmes, DeFrancesco may also sample HPV, EasyKart, and Honda four-stroke racing as well this season. It comes on the heels of a 2008 campaign that saw him race on both sides of the border with DeFrancesco/Tennyson Racing - a year that never really stopped after a family move to Florida during the Canadian Fall.
While temperatures dropped and karting stopped for many Canadians, DeFrancesco continued to refine his skills racing in the Homestead Karting Summer Series. Picking up the schedule at race three where he suffered a DNF, he became virtually unbeatable afterwards as he took back-to-back main event wins and was never off the front row. He took pole at race four, and fell to off-pole in the prefinal before taking a commanding six second win in the feature event. At race five he was on pole once again, and after winning the prefinal he took another feature with a last lap, final corner pass for the win. Multiple test and practice sessions have come as well, and DeFrancesco is ready to roll in less than a week.
World Karting Association KartWeek for the Manufacturer's Cup crowd begins with a practice day on Sunday before two official race days Monday and Tuesday. Racefanradio.com will be broadcasting from Daytona, with lap-by-lap coverage from the sprint track. DeFrancesco will follow KartWeek with a test at Homestead, and begin his second Florida Winter Tour just one week later.
