Ellis wins on return to racing.
Jason Ellis won a WKA regional road-racing event at the New Hampshire International Speedway this past weekend, after missing the last month and a half of racing due to a severe eye injury. The first race of the weekend was WKA Sprint Shifter 1. At the start Ellis jumped into the lead after a great start from eighth spot on the grid with Steve Mastine in tow. The two raced nose to tail for the first 15 minutes of the race. That was until Ellis made a mistake by going into the grass in turn one. Upon rejoining the track, Ellis set off after Mastine. After slowly chipping away at Mastine's lead, Ellis caught and pasted Mastine. With this, Ellis retook the lead having only a few minutes left in the race. Ellis brought home the win with Mastine a close second. Rounding out the top five where Scott Charis, Brian Arcari, and John Umbrianna.
In Sundays WKA Sprint Shifter 2 race, Ellis had immense problems on the starting grid as his kart stalled on the line. As the whole field passed him, he could only sit motionless until he was able to receive a push start. After getting started Ellis set off after his competition. Catching the tail of the field, Ellis made some very aggressive passes. These allowed him to work his way back up to second place, just ten seconds behind the leader. The win Sunday was just not in the cards for Ellis. He unfortunately ran into motor problems while closing on the leader. Steve Mastine took the win as Ellis limped home to a second place finish. Rounding out the podium finishers was Brian Arcari.
After the race Ellis said, "I'm just happy to be in a kart again. I didn't know if I was going to be. It was a shame that I had to miss the last WKA Road Racing National event a Summit Point Raceway, but the doctors told me I had to sit that one out. So I used this regional race as a warm-up for the WKA Road Racing Grand Nationals at Putnam Park in Indiana. My main goal is still to win both WKA National Championships in the Sprint Shifter 1 as well as Sprint Shifter 2 classes. Currently I sit fourth in the points in Sprint Shifter 1 and am tied for the lead in Sprint Shifter 2. Remembering that my competition has one more race in the books than I do. So after the drop scores are calculated I'm feeling very confident I can win both championships. I'd like to thank Extreme Sports Boston, Swedetech Racing Engines, and Bettencourt Honda for all their help this season."
