WKA Revamps Dirt Schedule -- Stadium Return Looms In The Future

10.01.2008 - As one season comes to a conclusion, the beginning of another is not too far off in the future. For the staff of World Karting, that means Daytona in December. While plans are being finalized for yet another year of racing at Daytona International Speedway, one missing ingredient in Florida this year will be the Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series.

For the past two years, Dirt Series competitors have competed about 45 minutes north of Daytona at the historic Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville. However, after reviewing the program in 2008, combined with a very sluggish economy, WKA Officials felt it was in the best interest to not add insult to injury by forcing additional costs to the competitor at a very financially challenging time of year.

"Having the expense of the holiday season will be challenging enough this year without adding the enormous cost of forcing competitors to compete just a few days after Christmas" says WKA President Rick Dresang.

With that said, WKA will stay the course with a five race national program, tentatively slated to begin in late March at a venue to be announced shortly. The remaining four dates are tentatively slated for April, June, July, and September.

According to Dresang, "This modification to the schedule will give families an opportunity to recover from the holidays financially, thus giving them a few months to catch up".

But while one tradition comes to an end for the time being, plans are already underway for a return to Daytona Municipal Stadium in December of 2009, thus renewing the largest event in WKA history. Discussions between Daytona and WKA officials have already begun for the 2010 season opener, a rebirth of the famed Dirt World Championship, and the battle for the infamous "I Made The Main" stickers that seem to carry more prestige than the winning trophy itself.

More information on the 2009 national schedule as well as continued Daytona updates will be forthcoming.
