Zoom Zoom Nationals features beautiful weather, superb competition

07.14.2009 -- The first ever Zoom Zoom Nationals at Road America is now in the books. Following a Sunday which again saw sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, racers left the world-class Wisconsin facility with another weekend of hard national competition behind them -- some satisfied, others pondering what could have been done better to improve performance and results.

Round 3 of the George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series driven by Mazda saw 18 national classes run their Qualifiers, Pre-finals and Finals over weekend, which followed two days of practice on Thursday and Friday. In an awesome display of diversity among the series' top competitors, only one racer, Arrow pilot Sam Beasley, accomplished a double-win weekend. Beasley drove to Final triumphs in late Saturday in Yamaha Jr Lite and Sunday in HPV Jr Lite.

Saturday's Manufacturer's Cup Final winners at the 10-turn Briggs & Stratton Motorplex were Ryan Phillips, Kyle Kalish, John Dixon, Nick Neri, Kevin Nelson, Garrett Johnston, Chris Wehrheim, Beasley, Kyle Tilley and Patrick Olsen. Sunday's victors at the Motorplex comprised Tony Jump, Santino Ferrucci, Beasley, John Zartarian, Mike McAndrews, Michael Burrell, Trent Hindman and Ryan Stewart. Steven Kilsdonk won the 12-lap Briggs Animal local option Final Saturday night and around a half-dozen Shock Wave Karting Kid Karts made laps throughout the weekend.

With approximately 60 Dunlop Tire National Road Racing Series driven by Mazda classes taking to the historic four-mile Road America course Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, there certainly wasn't only one double winner on the "big track" side of the Nationals. But competition was still top notch with over 10 racers taking multiple wins and numerous others finding victory lane at least once.

Racers driving to more than one victory in Round 5 of the 2009 Road Racing Series included Justin Taylor, Jim Russell Jr., Noah Stark, Chuck Gafrarar, Jarret Schwarz, Derek Somers, Nick Weil, Nick Wong, Eric Larue, Lance Fry, Mike Hoff and Alex Marchese.

While WKA would like to state that all racers left Road America safely, unfortunately, that was not the case. WKA member and 100cc Pipe competitor Charles (Bill) Grant, of Westlake, Ohio, suffered fatal injuries Sunday morning while competing in the 100cc Pipe Medium class.

All of us at WKA are deeply saddened with the passing of Mr. Grant and offer our condolences to his friends and family. Funeral arrangements will be posted on worldkarting.com when they become available. Grant was 49.

Approximate Road Racing entry counts topped off around 550 while the Manufacturer's Cup side saw approximately 425 entries between Saturday and Sunday's racing.

The racing was outstanding at the both tracks, and there was good support of the WKA's and the Badger Kart Club's efforts at the new event. WKA is hoping the opening version of this prestigious event is the first of many. Viewed by some as the Daytona Championships of the summer (fittingly held approximately six months later), the 2009 Zoom Zoom Nationals certainly gives WKA and Badger Kart Club a strong foundation on which to build.

WKA would like to thank Gail Bartelt and Mike Kertscher of Road America, the entire Road America staff and everyone involved in making the inaugural Zoom Zoom Nationals a success.
