Pavement Series heads to the Island this weekend

09.07.2009 -- The Rage Karts Speedway Pavement Series will conclude its 2009 season this weekend with a new event at a foreign track for many. The tour will head to the eastern end of Long Island for the Bonsignore Kart Shoppe Nationals at Riverhead Raceway, where national championships will be decided for WKA's only asphalt oval-track series.

Less than a month removed from Round 4 of the Pavement tour at BeaveRun (Pa.) Motorsports Complex, the country's best pavement-oval kart racers will utilize Friday to learn Riverhead's fast quarter-mile before 23 national and three local-option classes go off between Saturday and Sunday.

A number of tight point battles will take center stage on Long Island, but none of them will be as close as the three-way tie atop the standings in Briggs Sportsman 1 Lite. Stephen Brewer Jr., Aaron Weed and Brandon McGough each sit at 719 points after four nationals and the divisional transfers that are included. Each one of them will be looking for the win in Saturday's feature to give them the best possible shot at the national championship.

Matt Pappa has his divisional transfer included through the New York Asphalt Series, and it has him ahead in Sportsman 2 Lite and Heavy. Connecticut racers Chase Dowling and Nicholas Sowa trail Pappa in both classes. Dowling and Sowa are both from nearby Connecticut and are familiar with the track through their participation in divisional races there.

Pappa has a legitimate shot at a quadruple-championship season. The New York racer also leads Sportsman 2 Champ Lite and Heavy heading into Riverhead. John Hawley is 32 points back in Lite while Justin Mitchell and Nick Wiery each have their divisionals included but both are still over 100 back of Pappa in 2 Champ Heavy.

Sportsman 1 Champ Lite and Heavy are a bit clearer as most of the top drivers have their divisional transfers currently included. In Lite, Cole Timm is 40 markers ahead of McGough. Cole's younger brother, Ryan, sits only 55 points out of the lead in third. In Sportsman 1 Champ Heavy, McGough is 30 points ahead of Ryan Timm. Cameron Lovejoy is third, and he does not yet have a divisional transfer listed in the standings.

Patrick Robertson has commanding leads in Briggs Jr Champ Lite and Heavy. The Katonah, N.Y., racer leads Ryan Breithoff in both divisions but Breithoff is 100 points ahead of Patrick in Jr Raptor Champ.

The Briggs Jr classes have a pair of Haydens atop the standings. Jr Lite shows New York's Hayden Newcomb 90 points in front of Chris Hammett while James Hayden holds a slim five-point lead over Newcomb in Jr Heavy. Riverhead is James' home track, and he'll be hoping his experience on the quarter-mile pays off come this weekend.

Tyler Robertson has put together another terrific campaign in 2009. His efforts have him well ahead in Champ Lite, but he trails AJ Roderick by 70 in Champ Heavy. Robertson's pulled away in Briggs Champ Raptor, which now shows him over 100 points ahead of Ohio's Cullen Mumaw.

North Carolina's Tyler Gauthier is looking for a pair of championships this weekend. He's in the drivers seat in Briggs Lite and Medium -- always two of the most competitive classes on the Pavement tour. He leads another Carolinian in Lite with South Carolina's Hank Branham 72 markers back. Another Palmetto State racer, this time Justin Fulmer, is second in Medium but still 88 points back of Gauthier. Both Gauthier's and Fulmer's divisional transfers are included via the North Carolina Summer and Winter Series at OCR Action Sports Park.

Fulmer is well ahead of Craig Wetzel in Briggs Heavy. Kyle Long appears to have Briggs Raptor wrapped up with over a 300-point cushion over Branham.

When the points are updated next week, they will include transfers from the Northeast Speedway Pavement Series (WKANESPS). Only Maryland Speedway Pavement points are yet to be included, disregarding the WKANESPS.

Parking and pit pass sales will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. Competitors may pick up their pre-entries from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, as well. Gates open at 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday. And remember, if you're on the Island Thursday or end practice early Friday, "Racing Dreams," the documentary film that follows three former WKA Speedway Pavement racers, is showing at the Hamptons International Film Festival in nearby East Hampton, N.Y., at the United Artist Theater.
