Construction on dirt track at Daytona International Speedway under way

10.20.2009 (DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) -- As motorcycles buzzed around Daytona International Speedway's road course during last weekend's Fall Cycle Scene races, bulldozers were making noise outside Turns 1 and 2 in the West Lot as construction continued on the quarter-mile dirt track.

Construction on the quarter-mile dirt track, which will be made up of lime rock, has begun and will be complete in time for December's WKA Daytona KartWeek by Cometic Gasket and next year's March 3-4 AMA Pro Racing Flat Track motorcycle events, which are a part of 2010 Daytona 200 Week By Honda.

The new dirt track at Daytona International Speedway, which will enable WKA's Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series to make its return to the Daytona Beach area after a three-year absence, will have more than 5,000 temporary seats and Musco Lighting will provide lighting.

The Speedway Dirt event at DIS will mark the first time WKA's only national dirt series has raced on the grounds of The World Center of Racing. In previous years, the series always competed at the Municipal Stadium located in Daytona Beach. The Mazda-driven George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup and Dunlop Tire Road Racing series will also be racing at DIS during KartWeek, making it the first ever tripleheader event at one central location in WKA's history.

For information and tickets on all Daytona International Speedway events, go online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or call 1-800-PITSHOP.

WKA Membership Meeting, Code of Regulations vote, and Trustee elections

10.20.2009 -- As the 2009 competition year draws to a close, it's time to tend to WKA business. On Saturday, November 14, WKA will hold its Annual Membership Meeting at the WKA Headquarters in Concord, North Carolina. Although members are welcome to attend any regular meeting of the WKA Board of Trustee Meeting, this particular meeting gives WKA members in attendance the opportunity to hear a presentation on the state of the Association by WKA President Rick Dresang. WKA's fiscal year does not end until November 30, however, a copy of the 6-month financial report will be available. After Dresang's presentation, the officers, trustees and staff are available to answer questions and get member feedback.

The WKA trustees are also proposing changes to the Association's Code of Regulations. A ballot has been included in the next issue of WKA's Karting Scene magazine. All members are asked to review the proposals and send their ballots to WKA's CPA firm, Russell & Byrd, LLC at 4884 Higbee Ave. N.W., Canton, OH 44718. Ballots must be received by November 13. Ballots may also be delivered to the WKA office or cast at the Member Meeting on November 14.

And finally it's election season in WKA Districts 3, 6 and 9. During the week of November 16, Trustee Nomination Forms will be sent to all Master Members. To receive a form, Master Members must be members in good standing as of November 1, 2009. District 6 Trustee, Jerry Cole, and District 3 Trustee Bobby Gettys are eligible for re-election. District 9 Trustee, Dan Stowell has served two terms and is not eligible.

Trustee Nomination Forms are due back to Russell & Byrd by December 18. The three candidates receiving the most nominations will be placed on the election ballot in mid-January, 2010, and election results will be announced around March 1, 2010.

Attention Manufacturer's Cup racers heading to Lowe's season closer

10.20.2009 -- Due to a request for an increased number of tech personnel and corner workers, the WKA Manufacturer's Cup committee agreed to a $5 increase per class to cover the added personnel expenses. Classes are now $75 each, which is reflected on the updated entry blank for the SSC East / CRG Grand Nationals Nov. 6-8 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Teams that have already paid the former $70 per class will have a balance due at registration at Lowe's. Teams may pay the balance before arriving to Lowe's by contacting Marie Borsuk at 704-455-1606 Ext. 11.

Pre-registration for the Manufacturer's Cup season closer is open until Oct. 28. To view the event entry blank, visit www.worldkarting.com/pg/series/mc/mc-main.html.

If you're planning on staying in a hotel during the SSC East / CRG Grand Nationals and you have not yet make reservations, WKA advises you to do so ASAP. The Dirt Track at Lowe's will be hosting the World Finals for World of Outlaws sprint cars and late models the same weekend. Also running is the North-South Shootout for NASCAR modifieds at Concord Speedway, making it one of the busiest racing weekends of the year in the Charlotte area. Many area hotel rooms are already booked.
