WKA: Races scheduled for Constructor's Championship

Two SCCA Pro Racing/WKA Constructor's Championship rounds to be included on international karting calendar.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (June 6, 2002)--- International kart racing returns to the United States with the SCCA Pro Racing/WKA Constructor's Championship, which launches at Road America July 28. Two of the events in the four-race championship will be listed on the International calendar under the sanction of the Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK), creating a championship within a championship.

Drivers from all over the world will have the opportunity to challenge the best North America has to offer for the U.S. Championship featuring events at Road America and Charlotte. Drivers such as Formula 1 regulars Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button have already honed their skills while competing in the United States at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.

The SCCA Pro Racing/WKA Constructor's Championship will include two championships. Rounds One, at Road America, and Four, at Charlotte, will serve as the U.S. Championship on the International CIK calendar. The entire series, which also includes Round Two, at Norway, Ill., and Round Three, at Marshalltown, Iowa, will crown North America's top pilot in the Cadet, Formula Yamaha Jr., World Formula Jr., ICA, ICC, and Senior ICC classes.

"The return of international karting to the United States brings back some tremendous memories," said WKA President Randy Kugler. "Entertaining the world's best karting pilots made our drivers step up to the plate. The competition was at a premium and it brought our teams to the level they need to be. The U.S. will once again welcome the world's best to garner the U.S. Championship. Tighten up your helmet straps because we are ready!"

The World Karting Association was formed in 1971, conducting its first events the following year. WKA has become the largest sanctioning body for karting in the United States, along with being one of the largest in the world. Events are promoted at hundreds of dedicated karting facilities each season, as well as established automobile racing circuits including Daytona International Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway and Road America. Drivers such as Indy Racing League Champion Sam Hornish, Jr., NASCAR® drivers Ricky Rudd, Tony Stewart and Casey Atwood began their careers racing in the WKA.
