TYLER THOMAS PODIUMS AT STARS OF KARTING WEST OPENER
"Thomas provides Top Kart USA a one -- two finish"
April 27, 2009 -- Tyler Thomas Motorsports and Team Top Kart USA pilot Tyler Thomas scored a podium result at this past weekend's Snap-on Stars of Karting Series West division opener in Sonoma, California. With the event taking place at the challenging Jim Russell Infineon Raceway Karting Center, Thomas was fast from the opening session on Thursday morning and turned that speed into some solid results come Sunday afternoon.
After qualifying in the ninth position, Oklahoma resident Tyler Thomas would endure some tough times in the first heat race as contact would force him to retire from the event. A 16th place result would hurt his chance at a front row starting spot for the prefinal, but Thomas managed to get back on track scoring third and fourth place finishes in the remaining two heats.
With the Junior National field having trouble making it through the opening set of corners, the same would prove to be in the prefinal as a pile of karts ended up in the tire barrier after the drop of the green flag. With some big name drivers at the tail of the field, Thomas began to march his way forward moving into the top ten. On the final lap of the prefinal, some racing luck came Thomas' way and he was able to advance forward two more positions to claim a solid eighth.
Looking for a better start in the main event, Thomas exited the first corner in P5 and began to settle into a rhythm. The up and coming pilot turned some quick opening race laps and was able to follow his teammate forward as the Top Kart duo ran first and second before the halfway point. Looking to take the win, Thomas would run with eventual race winner Taylor Miinch for the middle portion of the race but was unable to keep pace in the final ten circuits. With a torrid pace at the beginning of the event, a large gap over the rest of his competitors would give him the space he needed to drive to a solid second place podium result.
"This was my first time to this facility and I love it," expressed Thomas after Sunday afternoon's podium presentations. "The track is very challenging but provides for some great racing. I am happy with the result and glad that Taylor and I were able to sweep the top two spots."
