Gilbert sets great pace in first round of WSK World Series
Kosmic Racing Team driver Mitchell Gilbert competed in the first round of the 2010 WSK World Series at the newly built Circuito do Algarve, Portugal between 30 June to 3 July going head to head with 40 of the world's best kart drivers, showing great pace in the Algarve.
This is the first time the brand new circuit has featured on the WSK World Series calendar, providing fresh challenges for the drivers and teams to see who can be quickest at the Atlantic coast event.
Mitchell had a mixed weekend, showing immense speed on the grippy and demanding 1.5 kilometre long circuit. Outstanding results in the qualifying heats, including an impressive win, a fifth place finish and an eighth place finish meant the young Australian driver was eighth on the grid for the pre-final.
A skilful and quick start saw Mitchell swiftly gain three places in the pre-final moving up into fifth position, putting the 16 year old driver immediately in the hunt for a podium finish. However luck was not on Mitchell's side as a rare technical fault on the fourth lap meant he had to retire from the race.
Heading into the final, Mitchell's pre-final retirement forced him to the back of the grid, starting from 29th position. An unavoidable incident on the first lap pushed him even further down the field, though Mitchell showed vast drive and determination, battling hard to reach as high as tenth position. Again, Mitchell's hard work was not rewarded with the result he deserved when he was forced to retire from the race on the final lap.
Fraser Sheader, Mitchell Gilbert's driver manager, said:
"What a disappointing weekend for Mitchell. The results he achieved in no way reflect upon the determination, skill and pace he showed on track. It was a new circuit for all of the competitors, and Mitchell got to grips with the layout quickly. His retirement from the pre-final was unfortunate, as this left him at the back of the grid in the final when really he should have been battling for podium places. This is supported by the fact Mitchell set the fastest lap in the final. Mitchell is however extremely resilient and will take the experiences from this weekend forward with him to the next round where hopefully he will obtain the result he deserves."
Mitchell will next compete in a one-off event in the German Kart Championship in Ampfing from 16 to 18 July. This will give the young driver further preparation time before the second round of the WSK World Series taking place from 29 July to 1 August at USA's Circuit City, Millville, New Jersey.
