Le Mans legends: Watch Audi and Peugeot battle for the final time
Every day, Motorsport.com invites you to rediscover a milestone edition of the greatest endurance race in the world, the Le Mans 24 Hours. Today, it’s the turn of the amazing intense and hard-fought 2011 event.
After going head-to-head since 2007, Audi and Peugeot meet for the fifth and final time in the 79th edition of the 24 Hours of Mans. Three Audi R18 TDIs tee off against a trio of new-generation Peugeot 908s.
From qualifying, the intensity of the fight between Audi and Peugeot is clear: the first six prototypes are within half a second of each other! Audi takes the lead at the start of the race but loses one of its cars in the first hour due to Allan McNish’s huge crash after the Dunlop Bridge.
The second Audi exit is even more frightening: Mike Rockenfeller suffers a horrendous accident during the night, from which he is lucky to escape unscathed. Three Peugeot 908s now battle one Audi R18 TDI, with changing conditions and smart team strategies in play! And despite the odds being against it, Audi rises to the challenge in style.
