Le Mans legends: Watch how Jaguar beat Porsche in 1988

Motorsport.com invites you to rediscover a milestone edition of the greatest endurance race in the world, the Le Mans 24 Hours. Today, it’s the turn of the classic 1988 event.

A five-time winner at Le Mans in the 1950s, Jaguar returned to the top with the legendary XJR-9LM, as the British marque targeted Porsche’s stranglehold on outright victory since 1981.

The 56th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans promised a battle between three major manufacturers: Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes. But Mercedes’ two Sauber C9s are forced to withdraw before the start of the race, as a result a worrying tyre failure in practice.

Down to a straight Porsche vs Jaguar duel, it’s three official 962Cs versus five XJR-9LMs. The race has an amazing climax, as the leading #2 Jaguar struggles with a gearbox problem that afflicts its sister cars too. And the #17 Porsche is chasing it down in the closing stages…

The complete version of this race, and all the archives of the 24 Hours of Le Mans – including official films and Allan McNish's personal selections – are available on Motorsport.tv.
