LMP2 leader Howson: “So far, so good”

Le Mans 24 Hours KCMG driver Matt Howson has spoken to Motorsport.com as the electric blue ORECA 05-Nissan he shares with Richard Bradley and Nicolas Lapierre continues to lead the LMP2 class.

“So far, so good for us, we are pleased with the way things are going at the minute,” Howson told Motorsport.com at 01.00am.

“My stint wasn’t without issue as we had a really dirty, smeary screen and I had to pit and get the tear-off done as I really couldn’t see much.

“So we have changed the procedure of how we clean it and the stuff we put on the screen to get the dirt and oil off. Don’t forget it is the first time we have run in to the night with a Coupe design.

“We lost a bit of time but fortunately it was when the safety car was out. We also got a penalty for working on the car whilst it was being re-fuelled, so we lost some more time then of course.”

Tyre usage the key at night

Howson went on to describe how the KCMG team is managing its tyres and how they are applied in the decreasing temperatures.

“Generally we are now looking after our tyres and not hitting the kerbs and just looking after the car,” he said. “We are triple stinting the tyres easily. TDS are always there and that is obviously what is keeping us on our toes.

“Track conditions were not particularly quick when I was out (approx. 9pm-11pm), there was a lot of dust and oil down and I think we might have been on slightly the wrong choice of tyre with the quick fall in temperatures.

“Now we are getting the pressures right and we may even change the compound. We are not suffering any real degradation but it’s just a question on perfecting the temperature window.”
