Over fifty cars for test

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest has relaxed its promise to select no more than 48 cars for the 24-Hours, and will in addition invite up to six 'reserves' to participate in the 6 May test day. They will appear on the strict understanding that they will only get a race in June if a preferred team drops out. Entries for the 24-Hours (16-17 June) have already opened, and will close on 28 February. The organisers will then spend the first two weeks of March selecting 48 definite cars and ("if the quality is good enough") up to six more reserves.

Audi, Chrysler and Dick Barbour each have three guaranteed entries on the basis of last year's performances, Panoz, Chevrolet and Team Taisan Porsche one each, so the selection is immediately reduced to 36 cars. Six times winner Jacky Ickx has been appointed Race Director, and will perform this duty on 6 May as well. There will be two 4-hour test sessions on 6 May, when all cars may be on the track from 09.00 to 13.00, and from 14.00 to 18.00. Since there is no element of competition to get into the race, the ACO will resume the normal timing system which was sadly lacking last May.

The famous 'Mulsanne hump' has now been lowered to such an extent that there is a clear line of sight from the second chicane to the Mulsanne Corner, and there should be no more aviating cars. The run-off has been greatly increased on the outside of the kink before the Indianapolis Corner, approached by the fastest cars at 320 km/h.
