Rebellion can aim for overall Le Mans podium – Prost

Rebellion Racing driver Nicolas Prost says the Swiss team can dream of finishing on the overall podium in the Le Mans 24 Hours after its superb start to the WEC season.

The drivers of the #13 Rebellion R-One, Alexandre Imperatori, Dominik Kraihamer and Matheo Tuscher, sit second in the WEC points standings after taking a brace of second places in the first two rounds of the new campaign at Silverstone and Spa.

Both races were characterised by a high degree of unreliability among the six manufacturer-entered LMP1 cars, a trend widely expected to continue this week at Le Mans.

And Prost, who shares the #12 car with Nick Heidfeld and Nelson Piquet Jr, believes that puts Rebellion in a good position to improve on the fourth-place finishes it has scored at La Sarthe and 2012 and 2014.

Asked by Motorsport.com what he believed was possible to achieve, the Frenchman said: “Overall podium, even something bigger – you never know.

“I think we have a good shot at doing something good. The factory cars have had more problems than I can ever remember, so here we can have a good shot at [achieving] something big.

“We have a good opportunity, but you have to be humble and focus on your own race, not make any mistakes – and then you see where you’ll stand at the end of the race.”

"We're not getting carried away"

Imperatori, meanwhile, was more cautious about Rebellion’s chances of causing an upset, pointing out that the factory teams are likely to have resolved many of the issues that afflicted them in Spa.

“We are still far away [from the factories] in terms of performance, so the reliability side of things is the only card we can play,” said the Swiss driver.

“But a 24-hour race is very different from a six-hour one, so we’re also not sure whether we’ll have it on our side. We’re not getting carried away.

“We know the factories have been working hard since Spa and have probably fixed a lot of their issues. We just need to focus on not making mistakes and anything can happen.”
