Kerr Set for Maiden Le Mans 24 Hour Start
London, England (June 13, 2007) -- Qualifying for the famed Le Mans 24 Hour race gets underway later today with Great Britain's Robbie Kerr set for his first taste of competitive action at the illustrious French circuit ahead of this weekend's endurance classic, Saturday 16th-Sunday 17th June.
The British A1GP race winner will make his twice round the clock debut sharing the #33 Barazi Epsilon-entered, Lowe's-sponsored Zytek LMP2 07S/2 with Japan's Haruki Kurosawa and former Champ Car and Indy Racing League front-runner, Mexico's Adrian Fernandez.
Having announced his participation in the 75th running of the Le Mans 24 Hour at the end of May, Kerr headed straight to France for the official test day on the sweeping 8.4-mile circuit on Sunday 3rd June. It proved to be a successful first outing for the former British F3 Champion from Burbage. Robbie, together with Fernandez and Kurosawa ended the day as the LMP2 trio to beat around the La Sarthe circuit. Fernandez placed the #33 entry at the top of the timesheets with a lap time of 3m39.016s. Not to be outdone, the #32 Barazi-Epsilon Zytek LMP2 sister entry, driven by Michael Vergers, later equaled Fernandez's fastest lap -- all in all, a promising outing for the Zytek entries ahead of this weekend's race.
Prior to the 55-car field taking the start on Saturday, set for 3pm local time, qualifying for the great race takes place Wednesday and Thursday, 13th-14th June. Both days host a pair of two-hour sessions from 7pm-9pm and again from 10pm to Midnight.
Having been powered by Zytek throughout an impressive first two seasons of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, where he scored a total of 14 podium finishes including wins in China and Great Britain, Robbie's eager to unleash the might of his LMP2's 3.4-litre V8-engine at Le Mans.
"I think the official test day proved that we're here to win," stated Kerr ahead of qualifying. "I've been nothing but impressed with the whole team and I think with Adrian (Fernandez) and Haruki (Kurosawa) we've got a driver line-up to rival the strongest in the field. I can't wait to get back out on track and see what we can achieve. It's an amazing opportunity to compete at Le Mans, there's simply no other track like it in the world so I'm personally very happy to be here. We've proved we're competitive but we're also well aware of the challenges that lie ahead -- 24 hours is a long time and a lot can happen!"
Robbie, in addition to scoring numerous single-seater wins and titles in the likes of Formula First, Formula Renault, Formula Palmer Audi, Formula Three and A1GP, has one previous sports car start to his credit with Zytek, scoring pole and a fourth place finish in a round of the Le Mans Endurance Series at Silverstone in 2004 driving the factory LMP1 entry.
