Ray scores over Raymond in last lap thriller

Aledo, IL (July 21, 2001) - The Winged Three-Quarter Midget Association went wingless upon their return to the Aledo Raceway, Saturday, July 21, 2001. Robbie Ray came home the winner after a last lap battle with Mike Raymond. Raymond passed Ray on the final lap exiting turn two, Ray then dove underneath Raymond entering turn three and beat him to the finish line by a car length.

Ray jumped out to the front at the start of the feature and gained a three car length lead over Raymond and Bill Jones early. Raymond and Jones battled much of the race before Raymond was able to get the advantage and move firmly into the second position. Tracy Hull put on a stellar performance driving for Gary Mallonee in the #98 machine. Hull who was involved in a lap three incident came from the back to finish in the fourth position behind Jones. Fifth position went to Shawn Scripter.

After a long rain delay, which halted action until after 8pm, the heat races were able to get underway on a very wet and tacky track. Raymond came home the winner over Doug Kraft, Brian Landrey and Doug Larsen in the first heat. In the second heat Bill Jones got the advantage on Ray at the start and never looked back taking the win over Ray, Hull, Scripter and Rod Thompson. <pre> Results Heat #1 (8 laps): 1. Raymond, 2.
