Miller masters the 'Demon D'

Brewerton NY - Mike Miller tamed the 'Demon D' of Brewerton Speedway on Friday night. A light drizzle on the track, kept the racing surface slick and proper for three-wide midget racing of the Ray's Yamaha 'Polaris' American Racing Drivers Club Midget Series.

Carey Becker led the field to the green. The 25 lap fast-paced feature saw Steve Buckwalter with the early lead on lap 3. Top points contenders Mike Miller and Ray Bull were found amongst the front runners early in the race.

Miller would claim the lead on lap 4, and that was all he wrote. Miller continued to open car lengths on the field.

By lap 10, he out paced the field by half a straightaway. Buckwalter remained solid in second with Bull holding down the third starting spot. Fighting for position in the top 5, was Frank Polimeda, Dave Shirk and Andy Martin. Polimeda would settle into fourth as the battle for fifth continued.

Sneaking into the picture was 16 year-old Ryan Smith of Kunkletown in his first midget start.

Miller began to lap the tail of the field on the 14th rotation. With a strong hold on the top position, Miller would maintain a 1/2 field lead until the caution flew on lap 20 for the spinning car of Steve Craig. Back under green, Martin spun in turn 3 bringing out the second yellow. The red flag would fly when Ed Stimely Jr. rolled over in turn 4 on lap 24, tightening up the field for a green -checkered finish.

Miller would take the final rotation and claim his second feature win of the 2004 season. Buckwalter held off Bull for the runner-up spot. Polimeda and Shirk rounded out the top 5, with Smith and Martin as the last two cars on the lead lap in sixth and seventh place respectively. Miller credited his awesome car to a large crew of volunteers. 'My car worked high or low,' said Miller. 'This is a credit to the crew. We can't be here without them. 'We bring five cars, we race to beat each other and everyone else,' said Miller.

Miller is running the former No. 3 that his daughter Tracy manned in 2003. The car houses a 2000 Stealth chassis, and a used motor. 'The motor was recently rebuilt, refreshed by Don Ott,' said Miller, this is not a new car.' The car however, was comfortable with the team car of Steve Buckwalter in second.

Buckwalter had a good machine as well. 'We don't get off the corner well, when the track is slick,' said Buckwalter, ''I'll take second to Mike, I'm glad to see him win.'

Point leader, Bull finished in third. 'We could never make-up time,' said Bull who lost a couple of positions on the start due to circumstance. Bull would have much rather preferred the final five laps in succession without the caution flags.

For a new competitor the Demon D' is 'awesome fun,' said Smith. The call to run a midget for owner Shawn Burke came in on Thursday night. Smith eager for the opportunity, was a bit nervous at the start, 'there is a lot of competition in the club and clean racing, that is what I like,' he concluded. With a sixth place finish, the young driver is sure to be a contender.
