BUCKWALTER AND ARDC FINALLY BEAT THE RAIN
Oley, PA - Friday the 13th turned out to be a lucky day for the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) and Royersford, PA's Steve Buckwalter. With his car getting better and better as the race wore on, Buckwalter made a late charge toward the front, settling into second place as sprint car ace Lance Dewease set a blistering pace around the Williams Grove Speedway.
But Dewease lost oil pressure as the field prepared to take the green flag on a restart with two laps to go. That handed the top spot to Buckwalter, who easily stayed out front during the final pair of circuits to win the season opener for the ARDC Midgets.
With 25 midgets signed in for competition, heat race victories went to Frank Polimeda and Ray Bull.
There were five different leaders during the 20-lapper at Williams Grove last Friday.
Dave Shirk led the opening revolution, then Mike Miller took over for the next three circuits.
Ray Bull shot past Miller on lap five to take command, and the five-time ARDC champion held the point until lap 11, when Dewease took over.
Dewease grabbed the lead on a restart, after a red flag for Donnie Trent, who crashed hard in turn one because of a broken rear axle. Trent was not hurt.
Dewease immediately checked out on the field, leading until that fateful restart with two to go.
