ARDC and NEMA Are Still Working On the Working Agreement

FLAGTOWN, N.J., Nov. 23 - Unlike what was stated in a track press release issued Nov. 18, the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) has not yet signed a written working agreement with the Northeastern Midget Association. Talks are still on-going and hopes are high that this will occur, but any such written agreement will have to be approved by the board of directors of both groups before it is instituted, and that has not yet happened.

If both clubs agree to work together in 1998 it will open the way to popular co-sanctioned events like the "Mini-Indys" run at Jennerstown (Pa.) Speedway and Flemington (N.J.) Speedway in 1996. Both of those events were won by ARDC CARQUEST Midget Series regulars at the time. The last such Mini-Indy run at Flemington occurred on Sept. 2, 1996 and was won by Lou Cicconi Jr. On June 22 of that year Bob Resco won a similar 33-lap co-sanctioned feature at Jennerstown.

Three features in the ARDC CARQUEST Midget Series were held at Flemington in 1997, although none were co-sanctioned. They were all won by the 1996 champion, Phil DiMario.

In addition, a special "First Feature" program was held at Flemington this year. That non-point show consisted of two 14-lap features which were won by J.R. Booth and Tom Fraschetta. These races were special events open only to drivers who had never before won an ARDC feature, so their names are not part of the 58-year-old organization's all-time winners' list.

"ARDC hopes to return to Flemington several times in 1998," said Mike Roselli, ARDC's business manager. "Talks are on-going between ARDC and NEMA representatives, and everyone is hopeful that something can be worked out for co-sanctioned shows there in 1998 too. I understand that a written working agreement would have to be approved by the boards of both groups, and as far as ARDC goes that hasn't happened yet. It is also our policy not to announce any dates until we have signed contracts in hand, but everyone is optimistic." -30-
