Chili Bowl Nationals: Abreu has a roller coaster Wednesday night in Tulsa

Rico Abreu mounted a masterful comeback during Wednesday’s Hard Rock Casino Qualifying Night at Tulsa Expo Raceway — until his luck ran out in the B Feature 1.

After a rough start to the day, when Abreu flipped in his heat race then finished fifth, the two-time Chili Bowl Nationals champion vowed to step up his game.

“I kind of half-spun and a car hit me,” Abreu said. “Kind of got into some trouble. We’ll rebound and put it in the A Main and go from there.”

Abreu rallied in the C Main. He was spun early, dropped to 14th then muscled his way to the win.

“I just really haven’t got going yet,” Abreu said after the victory. “Keith (team owner Kunz) is going to get the car a little better. I know my car is really good. It’s just a matter of doing my job on my part.

“The earlier these races start, it seems like the tighter I am. Then once the track slicks up, the tires build heat and then I get better. I just wish I could fire up a little faster. I don’t know if I forgot to race or if this is how this week’s supposed to go for me.”

Abreu lined up 13th for the B Feature 1 but was dumped in the early stages by Tony Roney. Although he worked his way back to fifth, following a lengthy caution, Abreu fell back on the final restart and finished 10th.

“It’s really easy to get caught up in other people’s mess,” Abreu said. “But I put myself in that position so I have to deal with it.”

If Abreu fails to transfer through the field on Saturday, he could be eligible for the defending champion’s provisional.
