Cicconi Completes Weekend Sweep in ARDC CARQUEST Midget Action Sat.
HAGERSTOWN, Md., April 26 - Lou Cicconi Jr. didn't get the lead until the next-to-last lap, but the Aston, Pa.-based driver still managed to complete a weekend sweep Saturday night as the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) CARQUEST Midget Series visited Hagerstown Speedway.
Three different drivers led the non-stop, 20-lap feature.
Outside front-row starter Doug Borger of Kunkletown, Pa., led the first seven circuits around the super-smooth, 50-year-old half-mile clay oval, with first polesitter Bryan Kobylarz of Birdsboro, Pa., and then Mark Freeland of Ickesburg, Pa., in hot pursuit.
Freeland, who took second from Kobylarz with a charge to the outside in turn three on lap three, was right on Borger's rear by lap six, and a four-car battle for third was waging behind them among Kobylarz; Walt Stearly of Trappe, Pa.; Tim Dietz of Hanover, Pa.; and Cicconi. Dietz got third on that lap, and two laps later Freeland passed Borger for the lead by diving under him on the backstretch.
By the half-way point Freeland had built up a fairly comfortable advantage over Borger and Stearly had dropped out, but two laps later the battle for third was boiling over and the four contestants - Cicconi, Dietz, Borger and now Ed Stimely Jr. of McVeytown, Pa., - were three-wide in places in varying order.
Cicconi had charged into second by the end of lap 12 and began to zero in on Freeland, while the fight for third settled into a two-car battle between Dietz and Stimely. Cicconi passed Freeland for the lead in turn four on lap 19, and Freeland, who was suffering from kidney stones, had to settle for second one circuit later. Dietz came home third; Stimely finished fourth and Borger was fifth. Gary Halteman, Bob Cicconi, Michael Roselli Jr., Bill Ertel and Fred Schell rounded out the top 10.
Dietz led every lap of the first eight-lap heat and Stearly led every lap of the second qualifier.
The next ARDC CARQUEST Midget Series races are scheduled for Dixieland (N.C.) Speedway Friday night, May 16; Flemington (N.J.) Speedway on Saturday night, May 24; and the Albany-Saratoga (N.Y.) Speedway on Friday night, May 30.
