A record 281 competitors from throughout the nation and beyond slung the clay for the 23rd Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at the QuikTrip Center's Tulsa Expo Raceway in four full nights of qualifying competition in pursuit of the coveted Golden Driller trophy that would be awarded to the winner of the 23rd Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals presented by General Tire. Jason Meyers was on the road to redemption from last year's 7th place finish in the "D" Main.
Meyers teaming up with Corey Tucker Racing for the 2nd consecutive year aboard the 14J was among Thursday night's qualifiers. Meyers' would line up 8th in his heat race to post a 3rd place finish. Meyers was among the top 16 competitors in combined passing points to earn a position in the nights A-main after finishing 3rd in his qualifying race. Meyers would line up 6th for the nights feature event, Meyers quickly advanced through the field running the high side and battling with the lead group of cars, whom from only 3 would directly transfer to Saturdays A main. With 3 laps to go Meyers slid to a stop in turn 3 bringing out the caution. "I am ashamed to say that I hit to the brakes too hard going into the corner and stalled the engine. We went from lining up on the front of the B main in Saturday to the front of the D main. What a complete disappointment. These cars really have great brakes, probably more than they need and I just got on them too hard trying to set the car." Meyers would be credited with 18th place for the night.
Saturday's events would boast an amazing 72 races to set the stage for Saturday's finale. Meyers had his work cut out for him to make it to the featured "A" Main event as he was scheduled to start on the pole position in the "D" Main. Meyers would lead all 15 laps to win the first "D" Main transferring him to the "C" Main. "We made some changes to the car on Saturday and really had the car driving forward, which we knew we had to do in order to come from the back of the C main. John Godfrey and Tim Clauson worked hard with us through the weekend to tune the car to my driving style."
Meyers started the 15 lap "C" Main 15th and quickly moved up through the field. He moved into the 7th position half way through the race and charged the top of turns 1&2 on a restart trying to pass for the final transfer. Meyers got a little high off of turn 2 and the 67K of Kasey Kahne slid past Meyers and the transfer spot car in 3&4. Meyers headed back to the top in 1&2 to try and make the pass, when Kasey Kahne spun up the track collecting Meyers. "We had a great car and I was sure we were going to get the job done. Unfortunately we got "Chili Bowled," and that was the end of our night. There just wasn't anywhere to go to miss him." Meyers would be credited with 18th in the "C" Main of the 23rd Chili Bowl Nationals.
While Meyers bested his 2008 finish, he was disappointed with how things ended. "We had a great car this year and I can't thank everyone who supported this effort this year for all that they have done. We had the car that we needed to make it through the pack, but this race is all about getting the breaks, and we just fell a little short," said Meyers.
