Aspar Mahindra tests new engine variation for 2017
The factory Aspar Mahindra team tested three potential engine configurations for the 2017 Moto3 season, in the post-Austrian GP test, at Spielberg.
Along with the engine, the Indian manufacturer also trialed a new swing arm, which Marco Bezzecchi had already raced with, at the Misano CIV Moto3 round, coming away with two wins.
On a cut-shot rainy day, both Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin were able to test new specification of the engine, currently being developed for 2017 season.
Out of the two specs, it was noted that Bagnaia's engine provided a better improvement around the Red Bull Ring, while comparing times from the weekend.
"The new engine was a big step and it clearly has more performance overall. As a rider you always want more engine performance and if the 2017 bike keeps heading in this direction it will be very strong," said Bagnaia.
"I also tried a new swing arm which again was an improvement, the MGP3O already handles so well and it just made it better," added the Italian, the only rider to be able to test the swing arm.
Teammate Martin, coming off fresh from his best Moto3 result also stated while both variation had an improvement, but Pecco's one had more.
"The one I used was a bit better. The one that Pecco tried was really good and a great improvement, especially in terms of acceleration," the Spanish rider said.
Mahindra Racing, CEO, Mufaddal Choonia was also encouraged with the advancement made. "Both Jorge and Pecco were pleased with the development we have done.
"In particular Pecco’s feeling with the swing arm and new engine spec is very encouraging for 2017. Overall it was a positive but short day," the Indian added.
Bagnaia aims top three in riders' standing
A back-to-back weekend means, the VR46 rider has another shot to push Sky's Romano Fenati down from top three, in the standings.
With only three points separating the two, Bagnaia has another chance to claim third place, chasing Jorge Navarro for second, with Brad Binder sitting on top with a healthy lead.
"We have fixed the problems we had in the last race and so I am confident of coming back with a strong weekend.
"My objective is to finish in the top five and move up into the top three in the championship, which is something important for us," Bagnaia said.
Meanwhile, Martin is hoping to repeat his strong Austria performance with a good bike at his disposal, as both riders believe the Brno circuit will suit the MGP3O.
