The race was red-flagged after just two laps, with Fenati fighting with Aron Canet after the restart and eventually inheriting a safe lead following a crash from the Spaniard.

Canet, who took pole by a dominant 0.9 seconds in qualifying, led after both starts, but eventually ended up suffering a high-side crash at Turn 19 while battling Fenati for the lead.

Points leader Joan Mir kept up with Canet on the original start, but lost out after the red flag, which was caused by Kaito Toba crashing near the racing line and requiring assistance from the medics trackside.

The race was restarted as a 12-lap event, and it was Fenati who took second behind Canet before outmanoeuvring the Estrella Galicia Honda rider to take the lead at Turn 15.

Canet quickly fought back at the beginning of the following lap, the lead duo trading positions two more times and pulling away from the rest of the pack prior to Canet's crash.

The incident gave Fenati a safe lead that the Rivacold Honda rider stretched his advantage to over 4.5s until the finish.

Gresini duo Jorge Martin and Fabio di Giannantonio completed the podium behind Fenati, the Spaniard getting his best finish of the year after taking third in the first two races of the season.

Martin was under pressure from di Giannantonio until the finish, and was eventually only ahead by 0.02s at the line.

Last year's runner-up Enea Bastianini (Estrella Galicia), who failed to score in the first two races, finished fourth, as Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing VR46) made it four Italian riders in the top five.

Juanfran Guevara (RBA) made a late move on John McPhee (British Talent Team) for sixth, as Mir, who held second for a handful of laps after Canet's crash was forced to settle for eighth.

The top 10 was completed by Philipp Oettl (Schedl GP) and Darryn Binder (Platinum Bay).
