Binder, who has racked up three consecutive wins heading into the Catalunya round, had a low-key start to the session, which was led by Estrella Galicia duo Aron Canet and Jorge Navarro.

The South African jumped into the lead during the final minutes and, despite being demoted by Antonelli for a moment, he quickly responded, beating the Italian by half a tenth.

Navarro will complete the front row as Nicolo Bulega and Khairul Idham Pawi ended up as top rookies in fourth and sixth respectively.

Gresini's Enea Bastianini will start fifth, just 0.143s off Binder.

Francesco Bagnaia took seventh, ahead of Jules Danilo, whose fastest lap was deleted due to him exceeding track limits.

The top 10 was made up by Canet and Romano Fenati.
