Having taken pole by a commanding margin of six tenths of a second on Saturday, Repsol Honda rider Marquez topped the final practice session for the race by only 0.076s ahead of Suzuki's Aleix Espargaro.

Marquez surged to the top of the times with around eight minutes remaining of the 20-minute session with a 1m49.177s, which he quickly improved to a 1m48.928s.

Espargaro immediately responded with a 1m49.004s, falling less than a tenth short of the two-time champion, and that was how the order remained until the end of the session.

The Suzuki man's younger brother Pol went third quickest late on with a 1m49.172s, demoting the lead Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso to fourth.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) was best of the independents' in fifth, followed by the second Suzuki of Maverick Vinales and the leading factory Yamaha of Rossi, who was 0.404s off the pace.

Jorge Lorenzo ended up eighth fastest, but only after crashing at Turn 8 - the reverse corkscrew - in the opening stages of the session.

The Spaniard sprinted back to the pits and was able to rejoin the session on his second bike with around eight minutes left, eventually clocking a time 0.840s off the pace to go eighth.

Michele Pirro (Ducati) and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) rounded off the top 10.
