Marlboro Yamaha Team duo Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa enjoyed mixed results in sweltering conditions during today’s first Brno qualifying session. With three minutes to go Biaggi put in a red-hot lap to grab provisional pole, while Checa, who admitted to feeling slightly out of sorts, put his provisional 13th place down to his own performance and is determined to put things right tomorrow.
"Max did a brilliant job today," said Marlboro Yamaha Team manager Geoff Crust. "He looked like he was going to do something good and he has. His confidence is high and we know what he can do when he’s in this mood. We’ll look at the data and analyse what’s going on with Carlos. His time’s too far away from the rest of the field and we’ll put that right for tomorrow."
BIAGGI ON PROVISIONAL POLE
Marlboro Yamaha Team star Max Biaggi signalled his intent to finish the season on a high with a provisional pole lap of 2m 1.572s – the fastest-ever official lap of the circuit. The Italian maestro is clearly in good shape. Encouraged by a successful test session at Mugello during the mid-season break, he is determined to show what he’s capable of this weekend.
"Today went well," said the Roman hotshot. "It’s always good to be out in front. The times are close, but of course I’m happy to be on pole. We had a good test at Mugello and the Yamaha is working well here. The biggest problem is chatter on a few corners, but even so, it’s really good to get a time like this. It’s oxygen for the team."
CHECA EXPECTS BETTER TOMORROW
Laying the blame squarely on himself, Marlboro Yamaha Team rider Carlos Checa could only manage 13th place today. But the gutsy Spaniard, who fell off without injury in this morning’s free practice, is determined to make amends in tomorrow’s session.
"Tomorrow’s another day," said the Spanish charger, "I’m not too comfortable on the bike yet. After I crashed this morning I took out my number-two machine and had a few problems, mostly with chatter. But the problem is more to do with me than the bike. I’ll sort myself out for tomorrow and then we’ ll see what happens."
CAPIROSSI RUNNING STRONG
Loris Capirossi (Honda) stormed to a strong second place in this afternoon’s session, leading the session early on and looking to build on his strong showings while carrying a hand injury sustained at Assen in June.
"I’m very happy," he said. "My hand’s not giving me any more trouble and I feel good on the bike. The rear set-up is sorted out and we’ve got a few problems with the front to sort out. Max’s time will be very difficult to beat, but maybe."
ROBERTS IN TOUCH IN THIRD
Championship leader Kenny Roberts (Suzuki) put in the third fastest time today despite suffering difficulties with both his machines. After leading the session with ten minutes to go he was bumped down two places and he expects to put in better times tomorrow.
"I had a few problems with one bike," said the American. "The motor wasn’t running right. I switched to the other bike and had another problem, but managed a fast time which shows what you can do when you have to."
