At just 15 years old, Marquez took his first grand prix podium in the 125cc 2008 British Grand Prix at Donington, finishing third behind fellow future MotoGP riders Scott Redding and Mike di Meglio. He went on to finish 13th in the standings, as di Meglio took the title.
The following season, Marquez matured into a much more consistent performer, taking his first two pole positions and a second podium on home soil at Jerez (pictured). He finished eighth in the championship, as compatriot Julian Simon took the title.
In his third year in the class, Marquez wrapped up the 125cc crown at Valencia with 10 victories and 12 poles to his name, edging out Nico Terol in the final race. Here he's pictured with MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo and Moto2 winner Toni Elias.
Marquez notched up his first win in Moto2 in only his fourth race in the class at Le Mans in 2011. He went on to win six more races that year, bringing his total to 17, but missed out on the title to Stefan Bradl after missing the last two races through injury.
The following season, Marquez prevailed in a season-long fight with Pol Espargaro, taking the Moto2 class crown with 10 wins to his credit. He wrapped up the title with a round to spare with a second place finish at Phillip Island.
After sealing the Moto2 crown, Marquez tested an unliveried Honda RC213V in post-season testing at Valencia in preparation for his step up to MotoGP in 2013, which was confirmed in July.
Marquez joined veteran Dani Pedrosa at the Repsol Honda squad at the start of 2013, replacing retired two-time champion Casey Stoner.

It didn't take long for Marquez to notch up his first MotoGP race win, doing so in just his second race at Austin. He beat teammate Pedrosa by 1.5 seconds, bringing his overall win tally to 27.
One of the iconic images of the 2013 season - Marquez passes Rossi off the track at the famous Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, going on to seal a third win of the season. His 30th overall came at the next race at Indianapolis, the start of an unbroken premier class winning streak in the States.
But Marquez's main rival of the 2013 season would be Lorenzo, who prevented Marquez from notching up five wins on the trot in a thrilling and ultra-close duel at Silverstone. Lorenzo's last lap move allowed him to come out on top by just 0.081s.
The season boiled down to a showdown between Lorenzo and Marquez at Valencia, the latter coming third to become the youngest ever MotoGP champion and the first rookie to win since Kenny Roberts Sr. by just four points. Five victories that year brought his total to 32.
While 2013 went down to the wire, Marquez utterly dominated the opening half of the 2014 campaign, taking an incredible 10th premier class win in succession at Indianapolis. Only Mick Doohan and Giacomo Agostini had previously managed such a feat.
Sure enough, a second title was soon to follow despite a patchy second half of the season, Marquez clinching the crown with a second place finish at Motegi. He ended the season 67 points clear of nearest rival Rossi, having scored 13 wins to bring his total to 45.
Marquez struggled to adapt to the 2015-spec RC213V, suffering a disastrous opening part of the season before reverting to the 2014 model ahead of Assen. Here he is taking only his second win of the year at the Sachsenring, having already fallen well behind title protagonists Lorenzo and Rossi in the points.
Despite arriving at Phillip Island out of mathematical contention for the title, Marquez triumphed in a classic encounter, overtaking both Andrea Iannone and Jorge Lorenzo on the final lap to snatch a fifth win of the season, his 24th in MotoGP and 50th in total.
