REDDING SIXTH AT RAIN SOAKED SILVERSTONE

The Marc VDS Racing Team's Scott Redding mastered the tricky conditions at a very wet Silverstone to finish sixth fastest in today's opening Moto2 free practice session. Hector Faubel finished 24th fastest, but declared himself happy with his first wet outing aboard the Suter MMX.

Redding couldn't find a good feeling with the bike during the early part of the session, struggling with a lack of feedback from the front and inconsistent traction from the rear. Stiffening the rear suspension transformed the bike, allowing Redding to lap consistently throughout the latter part of the session, as he worked his way up the timesheet.

The 17-year-old Briton posted his fastest time right at the end of free practice to claim sixth place on the timesheet, but his final laps weren't without incident. After running onto the kerb on the outside of Woodcote, the ultra-fast final turn at Silverstone, Redding had the bike completely sideways and was lucky not to go over the highside.

While Redding has ridden the Suter MMX machine in the wet during winter testing, today's practice session was Faubel's first experience in the rain with the Moto2 bike. The 26-year-old Spaniard was happy with his progress during the one-hour session on a track that he described as beautiful, despite the less than ideal conditions.

Faubel also stiffened the rear of the bike to improve his feeling and the former Grand Prix winner is confident that, wet or dry tomorrow, he can improve his position and his lap time ahead of the all-important qualifying tomorrow afternoon.

Scott Redding #45: 6th - 2'29.267
"I had no feeling at all with the bike at the start of the session. The rear felt like it was losing traction everywhere and there was no feedback at all from the front. We made some changes to the suspension and this improved things a lot. The circuit is pretty good, but you need to be a bit careful in some parts when it's wet. The level of grip changes and some of the older sections like Luffield are really slippery. The same is true of the kerbs, some you can use and others you have to steer clear of in the wet. I felt pretty comfortable turning some faster laps at the end of the session, but I did have a bit of a moment coming out of the final turn when the bike sent completely sideways and tried to spit me off. It was shaking so hard it made me dizzy! I think we're good for tomorrow, whatever the weather conditions, but I guess we'll only find out for sure in free practice in the morning."

Hector Faubel #55: 24th - 2'32.054
"It wasn't so bad today for my first time on the bike in the wet. The bike felt pretty good from the start, but the rear felt a little bit too soft even in these conditions. We went a bit harder on the rear suspension and it was a big improvement. This is a new circuit for everyone, and the conditions weren't so good today, but already I like it. It's a beautiful track and I'm looking forward to riding it in the dry, which will hopefully be tomorrow."

Pete Benson: Scott Redding's Crew Chief
"It was a good session today from Scott. We had a few set-up issues at the start of the session, but he stayed out there as long as he could and learnt his way around the circuit. Once we made some changes to the suspension he was able to go much quicker, as his feeling with the bike was better. This track seems to suit our bike and Scott's riding style pretty well and I think we can improve further tomorrow, but we'll have to see what the weather holds for us. Scott's knee certainly seems to have improved with treatment but, again, we won't know for sure until we get the chance to put together a long run in dry conditions. But, at the moment, it all looks quite promising."
