MARC VDS AIMING HIGH AT THE CATHEDRAL OF SPEED
After an impressive fourth place for Scott Redding at the British Grand Prix just two days ago, the Marc VDS Racing Team have moved on to the Netherlands for this weekend's race at the Cathedral of Speed that is the Circuit van Drenthe in Assen.
The historic circuit is currently the only track that has appeared on the Grand Prix calendar every year since the series started in its current form back in 1949. A former public roads circuit, Assen has been extensively modified in recent years, but has lost little of the unique character that makes it a favourite with riders in all classes.
Redding is determined to carry the momentum from his fourth place at Silverstone into this weekend's race, which takes place on Saturday afternoon rather than the more usual Sunday. The 17-year-old Briton is confident that his Marc VDS Suter MMX machine will suit the old style Assen circuit, much as it did the traditional layout at Silverstone.
Hector Faubel arrives in Assen determined to finally break into the top ten in the all-new Moto2 category. The 26-year-old Spaniard finished 12th in Mugello, but crashed out of the British Grand Prix on the penultimate lap after hitting oil dropped by a rival. The Marc VDS rider has twice finished on the podium at Assen in the 125cc World Championship and, while a rostrum finish may be out of his reach this weekend, Faubel is confident that scoring his best result of the season so far is a realistic ambition.
Scott Redding #45:
"I like the Assen circuit, although circumstances conspired against me and I didn't finish the race there the last two years. In a way it's similar to Silverstone in that it's an old style circuit where you can carry some real speed through the turns. The changes to Ruskenhoek corner will make it even faster, although there are still some slow corners that are pretty critical to a fast lap. I'm looking forward to the weekend ahead and I hope we can build on the fourth place at Silverstone. The team has worked so hard to set the bike up for me and now I need to repay their efforts with some good results, starting this weekend at Assen."
Hector Faubel #55:
"I'm looking forward to Assen. I've finished on the podium twice here in the past, although the circuit is a little bit different now. Still, I think a top ten finish is definitely possible here this weekend. As always, qualifying and a good start will be critical at this track. On the old, longer circuit it was easy to pass, but it's much more difficult since the track was modified and shortened a few years ago. After the disappointment of Silverstone, where we had problems all weekend, I hope we can get the bike working well, put in a good performance right from the start of practice on Thursday and then carry this momentum into qualifying and the race."
Michael Bartholemy: Team Manager
"Scott had a great result at Silverstone, but we need to keep our feet on the ground and carry on working hard to ensure that we continue to challenge at the front of the race. Last weekend's result showed quite clearly that Scott, the bike and the team have the potential, so there can be no excuses this weekend at Assen, which shares many characteristics with the Silverstone circuit. Hector had a difficult weekend in England, but I know that he's already put that behind him and has his sights firmly set on a top ten finish this weekend, at a track on which he's finished on the podium twice before. I'm confident that, as long as we don't experience any of the issues that marred his Silverstone weekend, he'll achieve his aim in the Dutch TT on Saturday."
