Marc Marquez’s remains cautious as recovery "progressing as expected”

Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has reportedly returned to “training normally” as he ramps up his preparations to make a return this weekend, but admits that he is still “proceeding with due caution”.

The Ducati rider will return this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, after being injured on the Saturday at Le Mans and missing Sunday’s races in France and the following Catalunya GP.

After a recovery process of around two weeks, Marquez successfully passed the check-up he underwent with his trusted doctors on Tuesday in Madrid, and has already travelled to Italy to attend Ducati commitments as the company celebrates its centenary this weekend. The historic brand will display a special livery on its bikes in Sunday’s race to mark the occasion.

“The recovery is progressing as expected,” Marquez announced in a team statement on Wednesday.

“I have returned to training normally these last few days and I will be on track mainly to test my sensations and my physical condition aboard the Desmosedici GP,” the statement added.

Marquez posted videos on his social media lifting weights with his right arm; however, this time he was not seen at the handlebars of any motorcycle – neither motocross nor a sport bike on track. The pain in the radial nerve of his right shoulder reportedly only reappeared at certain moments and always at the handlebars of his MotoGP bike.

On 10 May, after the crash at Le Mans where he fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot, Marquez underwent a double operation on the toe and on his shoulder, where a screw from a previous operation (2019) was causing occasional pain in the nerve.

“Both operations went well, but we are proceeding with due caution and with the final medical checks at the circuit,” explained Marquez, who must undergo a final check with the championship’s medical director, Angel Charte, at the circuit this afternoon.

Much has been said about how suitable it is to return at a circuit like Mugello, which is so demanding and tough for the riders.

“Mugello is an incredible circuit, and the truth is that it is also very demanding, but the support of all the Ducatisti will be extra motivation to do well,” concluded #93.
