Following on from setting a record for becoming the first MotoGP rider to ride across the Millenium Bridge in the English capital this week, Marc Marquez turned his attention to Silverstone and the Hertz British Grand Prix with the Repsol Honda rider getting his weekend off to the perfect start taking the top time today.

It is only Friday, but it is always important to start the weekend like this.

Determined to get back to his winning ways, Marquez was quickly up to speed topping the first free practice session by over 1s and moving into this afternoon he improved his pace even further to set a best lap of 2m 2.126s and taking just 7 laps to do so. Bradl continued to improve all day long on the LCR Honda and came away with the second fastest time of 2m 2.635s while Dovizioso continues to chip away on his Ducati GP14 and sits third with a 2m 3.011s lap time.

British riders hungry for victory at their home circuit

The British Grand Prix is always heavily contested by home riders and this year is no different and Bradley Smith started the brightest with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider in 4th place on combined times with a best time of 2m 3.070s while Yonny Hernandez (Energy TI Pramac Racing) was just .06s ahead of Englishman Scott Redding who set a fantastic lap of 2m 3.333s on the Open Class GO&Fun Honda Gresini.

Sitting in 7th place today is Andrea Iannone with the Pramac Racing rider’s best time of 2m 3.353s with the Italian ahead of GO&Fun Honda Gresini rider Alvaro Bautista whose best lap of 2m 3.391s was enough to stay ahead of Brno race-winner Dani Pedrosa with the Repsol Honda rider somewhat off the pace with a best time of 2m 3.410s in 9th and rounding out the top ten was NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro (2m 3.468s).

Marquez happy with opening laps at Silverstone

Speaking about his first day on track at the iconic Silverstone circuit Marquez was very upbeat. He said, “Today I felt good from the beginning. Silverstone is bit of a special track; there are many bumps and the temperatures are low, but we found a good base from the start and this helped us for the entire day. It is only Friday, but it is always important to start the weekend like this. For tomorrow we will try above all to improve how the bike absorbs the bumps, to go faster and take a small step forward.”
