The Spaniard took over P1 from Suzuki's Maverick Vinales with 45 minutes left on the clock, lapping in 1m29.158s, 0.141sec quicker than Vinales.

The Suzuki rider had a big crash midway into the session but still managed to hold onto second in another strong showing from the team.

LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow finished third ahead of Avintia Ducati's Hector Barbera, with the first Yamaha of Valentino Rossi in fifth, 0.277s off Marquez.

A relatively dry session but with a spell of rain saw a host of crashes from the riders, the worst being for Octo Pramac's Danilo Petrucci, who suffered multiple fractures in his right hand.

Other crashes included Crutchlow, Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo, Eugene Laverty, Bradley Smith, Jack Miller, Tito Rabat and Aleix Espargaro - all of whom carried on later in the session.

Rabat's and Petrucci's incidents brought out the red flag for a brief period. The Spaniard also reported a wrist pain but was cleared to continue.

Loris Baz rounded off a strong showing from Avintia finishing sixth ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Tech 3 Yamaha's Pol Espargaro.

The top 10 was completed by reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo and the first Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso.
