Marquez: Miracle save was “with the elbow like always!”

Honda’s star Marc Marquez says his elbow was to thank for his 28th MotoGP career victory at Aragon, after he almost fell in the early stages of a race he later dominated.

Marquez had just taken the lead from Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales when the front-end of his Honda folded underneath him as he turned in for a right-hander, and he had to picked up the bike by pushing his elbow into the track.

Despite losing four places as he sorted out the huge moment, Marquez would not be denied and surged back for a famous victory on home soil.

“I tried to push 100 percent at the beginning, because I know the first laps were important for opening a gap,” said Marquez, “But I pushed too much, like yesterday in qualifying a little bit.

“Then I did a big mistake and nearly crashed, I was able to save with the elbow like always!

“It was a big moment, but after this moment I say ‘okay, breathe a little bit, try to be quiet’ and then step by step I get the same rhythm like in practice.

“When I catch Valentino, I tried to prepare my attack. I slowed down a lap then push two laps really hard to open this gap, then try to manage the distance.”

“Important victory”

Marquez now leads the championship by 52 points over Rossi, who was also beaten by his Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo today.

“It’s not the same to go from Aragon 38 or 39 points [ahead] than 52,” added Marquez. “Honestly the win was important, in the last races Valentino was catching step by step and it’s important to stop [his momentum], for his motivation also.

“Always at this circuit, our speed is really fast and it’s good for our bike. Honestly in practice I felt better than in the race, because with our bike you must push 100 percent all the time and sometimes you overheat the tyres.

“Today was really important to attack, because during Misano, Silverstone I was there trying to manage the distance, but to be champion sometimes you must take risks. You must choose the correct circuit and this one is one of the ones I marked on the calendar.”

“It was important this victory.”
