With rain falling overnight, the session started in damp conditions, but the track was dry enough from the get-go for the field to use slick tyres.

Folger led the majority of the session, taking first place in the beginning, with only Cal Crutchlow and Aleix Espargaro managing to briefly demote the German.

Eventually, Folger's time of 1m21.635s with seven laps to go left him with a gap of over two tenths. Pedrosa halved his advantage, but nobody else came close to overhauling the Tech 3 rider.

Espargaro was third for Aprilia, ahead of former teammate Maverick Vinales, as Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow completed a top six split by less than three tenths.

KTM duo Mika Kallio and Pol Espargaro were seventh and ninth, sandwiching Valentino Rossi.

Pole-sitter Marc Marquez was 10th, the Spaniard making two mistakes at the very end of the session.

Most of the warm-up was incident-free before Loris Baz and Alvaro Bautista both crashed, the latter falling at T12.
