Mugello MotoGP statistics: Rossi, Dovizioso set new records

Jorge Lorenzo scored his first win as a Ducati rider since joining the Italian squad at the start of the 2017 season. His last grand prix victory came in the 2016 season finale at Valencia (Spain).

It was Lorenzo's first win for a manufacturer other than Yamaha. With this result, he became only the sixth rider to win for two different makes, joining Rossi (Honda, Yamaha), Biaggi (Yamaha, Honda), Stoner (Ducati, Honda), Dovizioso (Honda, Ducati) and Vinales (Suzuki, Yamaha).

In qualifying, Lorenzo secured his first front-row start of the season, ending just 0.035s off pole.

Lorenzo was beaten in qualifying by Rossi, who secured his first pole since the 2016 Japanese GP. It was his 55th pole in Premier class and 65th in all categories, allowing him to equal Lorenzo in the all-time standings. Marquez continues to hold the record for most pole positions in all classes of grand prix motorcycle racing with his tally of 74.

It was Rossi's second pole position on home soil in 10 years. The Doctor, as he famously called, became the oldest rider to start a race on pole since Jack Findlay in 1974.

Reigning Moto2 champion Morbidelli became the first rookie of 2018 to advance to Q2, qualifying 12th.

By contrast, Pedrosa endured his worst ever qualifying result and had to start the race from 20th position.

Although Rossi did not win the race, he did cross the line in a strong third place.. It was the 56th time the Italian finished on the podium after starting a race from pole.

Although Rossi holds the ultimate record of Italian GP wins (seven in Premier class and nine overall), Lorenzo is closing the gap. He's won in Italy seven times, with six of his victories coming in the Premier class.

By finishing third, Rossi became the first MotoGP rider to score more than 5,000 points.

Danilo Petrucci set the fastest time in a race for only the second time in his career. However, his time of 1m48.001s fell short of the lap record.

On the other hand, Rossi's qualifying time of 1m46.208s marked the absolute Mugello lap record.

Another record in MotoGP was beaten over the Mugello weekend. Dovizioso attained a top speed of 356.4 km/hr, surpassing the previous MotoGP record of 354.9 km/hr.

Marquez continues to lead the championship after Mugello, but saw his points advantage diminished after a fall - his first in a race since France 2017.

Honda was absent from the podium for the first time in 2018. With factory riders finishing outside the points and Cal Crutchlow only sixth, it was Honda's worst result since last year's Italian GP.
