Suzuki GP Team to run Michelin from Jerez race.

Michelin is pleased to announce that Team Telefonica Movistar Suzuki will once again be running on its tyres from the forthcoming Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix in Jerez (May 5). The team will be switching from the tyre manufacturer with which it worked on the first two races of the 2002 season back to Michelin, with whom it has a long and successful history.

The Suzuki GSV-R V4 four stroke machines ridden by 2000 World Champion Kenny Roberts Jr and Spanish star Sete Gibernau will run on Michelin for the first time at Jerez on Friday during free practice. Because of production planning, Michelin will not be ab le to make the latest specification four stroke tyres available to Suzuki at the beginning of this collaboration. The bikes will therefore run initially on 2001-specification tyres, the same tyres that won every 500cc race in 2001 as well as the World Cha mpionship.

Michelin and Suzuki have a long history together at the pinnacle of motorcycle racing, Suzuki giving Michelin its first real opportunity in 500s. In fact Michelin's very first 500cc race win came on a Suzuki when Jack Findlay won the Isle of Man TT race i n 1973. Barry Sheene went on to give the pairing consecutive World titles in 1976 and 1977, while Marco Luccinelli (1981), Franco Uncini (1982) and Kevin Schwantz (1993) all won 500cc titles for Suzuki-Michelin before Kenny Roberts Jr's triumph in 2000.

Michelin has now won a total of 279 500cc and GPMoto races since that first Findlay victory and scored 21 500cc World Championships. The most recent win in South Africa was Michelin's 56th consecutive victory in the top category.

The arrival of the two Suzukis in the Michelin camp will bring to thirteen the number of bikes running on the French tyres in the MotoGP category, including six 'works' four-stroke bikes.
