Turner has good car but finishes 22nd/

BARRIE, Ontario: Al Turner in the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid returned to Peterborough as the defending champion, winning this event last year with a late race move on #17 D. J. Kennington. He was moving through the field again this year when a late race incident took him out of the hunt for a podium position, resulting in a twenty second place finish. The Logel's Auto Parts 200 was scheduled for Saturday but rain during the qualifying session shut things down for the night. A drivers meeting would later reveal that as time trials had not been completed the teams would line up for the start of the race on Sunday based on their point standings this year.

Turner had a decent car during the practice session and had previously stated that starting up front was important in this race as attrition can be high and passing lapped cars would be tough again this week. When the decision was made by CASCAR to line the field up based on season points Turner knew he would have his work cut out for him starting in 17th.

The race was going as planned for the Blue Streak Intrepid driver on lap 160 with Turner attempting to pass for third when he was forced three wide to the outside, resulting in a loss of three positions. Turner fought his way back and with a daring move late in the race, cleared through several lapped and lead lap cars to take over fourth. A competitor took umbrage with the move and appeared to retaliate with a push to the Blue Streak Intrepid that sent Turner spinning wildly down the backstretch. When the dust cleared he had been hit by at least one other lead lap car and the damage was extensive. He made it to the pits for repairs, losing three laps in the process to cross the finish line a disappointing twenty-second. Turner commented after the race "We had a top three or four car today and got taken out by someone who didn't like the pass I made on him. On the positive side our Blue Streak Intrepid's have been strong at both races this year and we know we can run up front, so we'll move on to St. Eustache and look for a good finish there."

Podium finishers: 1. #17 D.J. Kennington in the Castrol Intrepid 2. #22 Scott Steckly in the AW Millwrights Pontiac 3. #64 Mark Dilley in the NTN Bearings Taurus.

The next event on the agenda for Al Turner and the #76 Blue Streak Racing Team is event #3 at Autodrome St. Eustache just outside Montreal, PQ on Saturday June 1st 2002.
