"Racing is how we get our kicks and of course quality family time"
HAMILTON, ONTARIO (June 27, 2007) -- Auto racing has been a large part of the Lapcevich family for three generations. From his Hamilton roots, patriarch Joe Lapcevich started racing at Speedway Park at the top of the escarpment in Stoney Creek in the 1960s. As the years went by Joe's sons Jeff Lapcevich and Joe Jr. started in 1989 driving Camaros in the Players Ltd/GM Motorsport Series, while youngest brother Jim learned how to compete at Flamboro Speedway while still in his teens.
And this weekend the tradition continues with this racing family. Jim will run in the NASCAR-Canadian Tire event at Barrie Speedway. Jeff, along with his son and third generation family racer, seven-year old Cayden Lapcevich, will be continuing his excellent showing in Quarter Midget racing.
And for Joe, chances are he will be at both places cheering on his family.
"Racing is how we get our kicks and of course quality family time," explained a proud Joe Lapcevich. "We've been going to the races for as long as I can remember and I'm proud that the boys are carrying on the family tradition."
Jim Lapcevich will pilot the #25 EMCEA Transport -- Tim Hortons Fastline Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo for 300 laps around Barrie Speedway's one third mile tri-oval in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series MOPAR 300.
"There is one thing about Barrie, it's always exciting for the fans," said Jim Lapcevich. "I'll guarantee you one thing -- there will not be a dull moment," added the 35-year old driver from Hamilton, Ontario.
Jeff Lapcevich will head south of the border with wife Sheri and sons Cayden, Treyten, and Ryden to Pennsylvania, where Cayden will compete in with the Quarter Midgets of America in the Jr. Honda class in his #34 Bull Rider Race Car.
"Cayden has been doing very well", said Jeff Lapcevich. "Last weekend on Saturday he dominated both the Jr. Honda and Jr. Stock classes, winning his heat and feature in both classes at Miami Valley, near Xenia, OH. On Sunday, he won both Jr. Honda and Jr. Stock heats, then started fifth for the Jr. Honda feature. Cayden worked his way to about a quarter track lead and would have had a clean sweep, but got a little to aggressive in the finals, got into a lapped car and spun himself out," he continued. "I guess he takes after his Uncle Jimmy, the assertive part that is. Cayden still managed to pick up third spot in that race and seven wins for the weekend."
Joe Lapcevich will keep a watchful eye on both of his sons and grandson Cayden. Apparently, Joe still has his competitive spirit, but these days he's on the Queen Elizabeth Way in Ontario, or the New York State Thruway to cheer on his family.
The MOPAR 300, race three in the 12-race NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule will take place Sunday, July 1 at Barrie Speedway, located north of Barrie, Ontario. The green flag is planned to fly Sunday night at 8:45 p.m.
