TORONTO, ON - Starting in November, all 12 races that made up the 2002 CASCAR Super Series will air on Speed Channel. Currently the U.S. based cable network has almost 67 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, the agreement between Super Series TV Producer James Robinson Associates Ltd., CASCAR and Speed Channel will expose Canada's top racing series to an unprecedented number of racing enthusiasts.
The premier Canadian airing of the CASCAR Super Series events has already taken place on Rogers' Sportsnet. By airing on Speed Channel (formerly Speedvision), CASCAR will become the only Canadian-based racing series to have its entire schedule broadcast on Speed, the world's 'number one' dedicated motorsports channel.
"CASCAR is very delighted to be back on Speed Channel," said CASCAR President Tony Novotny, who noted that the series has previously aired on that network in 1998 and 2000. "The response to CASCAR from viewers all over North America - in the form of emails, letters and telephone calls - has been fantastic when the races were on in the past. The added level of exposure for our drivers, sponsors and our high quality of racing is very significant. CASCAR looks forward to a bright future with North America's authority on motorsports broadcasting."
In announcing the agreement, Super Series TV Producer James Robinson said, "Speed Channel is an excellent opportunity to showcase CASCAR's outstanding motor racing talent." Telecast Director Joel Robinson concurred, "CASCAR is the premier stock car racing division in this country. Speed's audience will witness some of the best short track and roadcourse racing talent in North America. We are glad to play a part in putting CASCAR on the 'World's fastest network'."
As in the past, the support of Standard Motor Products (Blue Streak-Hygrade Motor Products, in Canada) will play a significant role in having the CASCAR Super Series races aired on Speed Channel.
The pace with which Speed Channel is expanding its reach matches the pace of the sport it is dedicated to covering. Primarily owned by FOX, a new arrangement with SPEED will boost the channel's total committed subscriber count to nearly 67 million in the U.S. and Canada. To underline the impressive rate of the network's growth, that figure stood at 30 million, as recently as two years ago.
The first CASCAR race will air on Speed Channel on Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. (EST) and will slide into the slot previously occupied by the NASCAR Winston Cup <pre>qualifying shows, which regularly air on Friday evenings.
