Monday August 7, 2000: Hamilton’s Dave Jacombs and the #88 Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes Taurus team had to overcome a major hurdle to even start the Autopro 200 in St. Eustache on Sunday. Upon entering the parking lot of the mall across from their hotel in Laval early Sunday morning it was discovered that the truck, trailer, race car and all the Speedy team’s equipment had been stolen. A call to the police determined that it was not towed and a search of the area was quickly orchestrated but there is little hope of anything being found.

A distraught Jacombs arrived at the track late with the CASCAR practice session nearly complete, looking to rent a ride for the day. After discussions and input from Dave Whitlock owner of Whitlock Motorsports who maintains the Speedy Taurus and who also owned some of the equipment stolen, the offer by McLellan Motorsports team owner Ken McLellan and driver Jason McLellan was taken up. They supplied Jacombs with their road course car to qualify and run as many laps as he felt comfortable with. There was no time to change the car back to an oval set up as this is a day long job, so the Speedy driver lined up in the 29th and final qualifying spot for the Autopro 200.

Jacombs entered this event a solid third in the Eastern Super Series Point standings and needed only a top fifteen finish to be assured of securing this position in this the final event for Eastern Championship. The #03 Artic Clear team had last run this car two weeks previous on the Edmonton Airport Road Course facility where they finished in eighth. The car had not been looked at since, as it was not expected to be used again until the end of August. With very little time, the Jacombs team did not have an opportunity to make any adjustments to the car and were forced to start with a car set up to make both left and right hand turns.

Jacombs who even had to borrow teammate Whitlock’s spare helmet knew after only one lap that he was not going to be able to take a chance on staying on the track long. The car did not want to make the turns and Jacombs did not want to compound the problems of the weekend by doing any damage to the Artic Clear car so after four laps the Speedy driver pulled in and parked the car for the day.

Jacombs team mate Mark Dilley and D. J. Kennington in the Castrol Dodge were serious point standing threats late in the race as they were running in the top six. Bad luck for Dilley who suffered a flat tire with only a few laps to go and finished 13th and Kennington who got tangled up with another car and finished 14th, wound up leaving Jacombs third in points (unofficial).

Jacombs other team mate Dave Whitlock experienced trouble in the early going of the race after qualifying third. All the body panels on the front of the Whitlock entry were missing but he made a spectacular run from the back of the pack to finish on the podium with a third place finish.

Dave Jacombs and the Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes Team would sincerely like to thank Ken, Joan & Jason McLellan for the use of their back up car and congratulate them on winning the Eastern Rookie of the Year title.

A $10,000.00 reward has been posted by Whitlock Motorsports for the recovery of the equipment. They can be reached at 519-845-0579.

The next event on the Jacombs Racing/Speedy Auto Service/Raybestos Brakes team schedule is the UAP Napa 250 km event at Mosport International Raceway August 25 – 27th.
