HOME HARDWARE TEAM RESPONDS TO THE CHALLENGE
July 26, 2008. From the beginning of the season Don Thomson Jr. and the Home Hardware Chevrolet have been among the fastest competitors on the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCATS) schedule. When faced with a challenging and slippery track in Edmonton and a starting spot deep in the field for round number six, the Home Hardware team came up with a tremendous effort.
Through the practice session in Edmonton the Home Hardware Chevy did not show the performance the team felt they were capable of. "The track was really kind of slippery all through the session" said Thomson "and the car just didn't feel right".
The Home Hardware team went to work prior to qualifying to try and improve their lot. Unfortunately the expected results did not occur and Thomson would be forced to start an uncharacteristic eleventh on the grid.
Accepting the challenge head on the Home Hardware Chevrolet team continued to look for improvement in the car right up until the start of the race. Having worked for several hours and making substantial changes the team hoped their driver could also help them through thirty two laps of race. The entire team was rewarded for their efforts.
From the drop of the green flag the Home Hardware Chevrolet appeared to be working much better and Thomson began to inch forward, Quickly inside the top-ten he continued to look for opportunities to gain positions. Battling hard right up until the closing lap Thomson would finish a strong sixth after a very demanding weekend.
"I woke up this morning and thought if I could get a top-five I'd be really happy" said Thomson. "We snuck into fifth for half a lap but an untimely caution put us back in sixth but we're happy. We learned a couple things about the new car and that's big as we head into Montreal".
Don Thomson Jr. sits second in the overall driver standings.
The 2008 NCATS schedule has expanded to thirteen events this year run on ovals, road courses and temporary street circuits across Canada. The next event takes place this coming Saturday, August 2nd back in the East at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. You can watch all thirteen races this season on TSN.
